Sunset Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Sunset is a magical time on the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. There is movement everywhere. Dolphins are rounding up their dinner, manatees are moving into the shallows to find a comfortable spot to spend the night. As the light fades and the sky ignites with dynamics color, “Mullethead Island,” a federally protected rookery, buzzes with activity as many of the refuge’s 358 unique bird species flock above you to their protected nests for the night. Typical species to expect include Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills, all set to the backdrop of rocket launch pads and iconic NASA landscape. Launch into your escape.

Sad to say we have to give this trip a poor rating for several reasons. First I’ll give you the good. It was a beautiful paddle. Obviously what you see in nature isn’t always consistent so we didn’t see many dinoflagellates but did get to handle lots of comb jellies. That was really cool. 1. We were not provided with an address of where to meet. When we called the numbers listed no one answered. We had to wait until our guide called us to get a location. 2. The guide (Anthony) was very disorganized and disheveled. He said we were supposed to have flashlights in our vests which we didn’t. He also forgot to give us our glow sticks so that boats could see us. We were also required to sign waivers even though we already took the time to do so before hand. 3. The tour became very space and physics based and not in an interesting way. More like a someone lecturing you in a freshman college course. Additionally all his info became very opinionated. Just not what I want from a professional. 4. We were given the option to tip while booking (prior to the trip) and did so. When my friend told him that, Anthony replied “well I won’t see any of that.” From previous reviews it seems that this is a one off experience, but unfortunately it was bad enough I needed to share.

This was such a amazing and worth while experience! my boyfriend surprised me with this for our anniversary and It was such a unique and amazing activity. But the best part about it was our tour guide Brandie, she was just simply excellent and informative. Such a joy and really took the experience to the next level. Since it was so dark, i was a bit skeptical, but I felt completely safe and confident in her the minute we started to kayak.
