Tours are available several times during the week, but we chose the evening tour (Thursdays), because you really don't want to miss the neon lights. Our guide was really generous with his commentary, leading about 30 of us around several blocks to examine the Art Deco hotels and eateries, entering several of the hotel lobbies. He had interesting stories to go with each view, and gave us recommendations for visiting additional ones on our own. His explanations were on several levels, thus appealing to some teenagers in attendance as well as the usual collection of adults. He explained the development of the Art Deco movement, telling us what is not Art Deco as well as what is. The tour took nearly two hours of leisurely walking. Street parking (metered) was available within a block of the starting point. About $3 got us enough time to first enjoy a great meal (at the Breakwater, half a block from the tour starting point) and then do the tour. A terrific experience!

It's frightening to think that so much history was this close to being lost to neglect and greed. But through the outstanding work of the Miami Design Preservation League, many of the old structures have been saved and restored. Don't miss the opportunity to take the tour - it's only an hour and a half long - and take in some great examples of 1940s vintage Miami Beach Art Deco along with a some stops taking in Mediterranean Revival, and Miami Modern (MiMo) structures. Definitely worth the time. I would recommend trying for a week day tour as larger weekend groups don't have the opportunity to see interior spaces as readily.

We had a leisurely and easy walk ( approx. 90 minutes long ) with our voluntary tour guide Kent who took us along Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue highlighting the best of the Art Deco buildings. It was very informative to hear how Miami came to exist , the population , the fall to notoriety and the rise of its popularity as a holiday destination. Kent explained the evolution of the lovely pastel buildings and the various types of Art Deco designs attributed by the various architects . We hope that the preservation movement led by Capitman etc in the past continues in the future and that the pastel tropical colours will be preserved. After all, it is the combination of these pastel colours together with the designs as a whole joint entity that conjures up the iconic images typical of Miami . I hear that the authorities are removing the pastels and making all the buildings off- white or beige which personally I feel will be detrimental to Miami's image !! Kent took us into some of these buildings pointing out features that we would have walked past in ignorance and we learnt how to recognise "art deco " features. There is only one walk per day @ 10.30am ( 2 walks on Thursday I think ?? ) and it costs $20 per adult but it all goes towards to restoration funds of MDPL .
