Wonderfully relaxing ride. John the bartender was knowledgeable, courteous and made a great prickly pear margarita.

This adventure was so much fun! I would definitely book this trip! First a few words of caution. They have you check in over an hour early. Take water and sunscreen for your wait outside. They do have picnic tables, some shade, a depot museum, story boards, food and souvenirs for purchase. We purchased tacos that were not edible and we took one bite before throwing them away. They were stale taco shells with chunks of pure fat! But alas, once on the train our seating was very very comfortable with large, clean windows for viewing. It was worth purchasing the first class tickets! They greeted us with champagne, served a buffet of appetizers, enough for a complete meal of fresh, raw, vegetables, ribs, chicken wings and brownies. Unlimited water bottles and beverages for purchase, wine, beer or mixed drinks. The service was quick and excellent! A narrator advised when we should step to the open car for better viewing and was very informative. We passed through bridges, tunnels, towering rocks, creeks, Indian ruins and wild life. Excellent trip, value, educational and a photographic playground! Book it!

When visiting Phoenix, we enjoy exploring the areas within a few hours drive. When I read about Verde Canyon Railroad and the areas we would travel through, I knew it would be AZ scenery we could never experience behind the wheel. Booking was easy online, the drive was about 2 hours northwest of Phoenix (30 miles south of Flagstaff) on good roads through a couple of picturesque towns. Arriving, parking was easy. We picked up our tickets in the depot/gift shop/grill and got in line to order a light lunch. They say you can eat on the train, but we traveled coach and that would not have been easy! One half hour before departure, we boarded the Tucson car and took our seat. An open air car adjoined our coach and we were able to move easily in and out and the scenery warranted it. We traveled past cave dwellings, rock formations, canyons, verdant river valleys all in a relaxed, well-narrated setting. We enjoyed hearing every train song ever recorded too. Beer, wine and snacks were sale in each car. Four hours later as we arrived back in a Clarkdale, we were happy to have enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing and picturesque afternoon on the rails!
