Wind your way through a red rock paradise, with tracks that hug the curves of the Verde River. Every season offers a different reason to ride! This was a real treat. Very relaxing and the views, food, and first class car were just wonderful. You also can go out to the open air cars for photo ops, although you can take a lot of pics from the inside too! I highly recommend this little trip!

Took a day tour with Detours from Scottsdale which included a stop in Jerome and a visit to a neat museum in Clarkdale dedicated to copper (see separate review). The main attraction of the day was the train ride on the tracks originally laid to service the copper mines. The vintage 1950's locomotives are impresive machines and look wonderfully iconic (even to a non-train enthusiast). The carriages have also been restored and the First Class car we travelled in was very plush; also included was a welcome drink and snacks. Each carriage has an adjacent open air car so you could alternate between taking in the view through the large windows (from a really comfortable seat) or standing on the open air car for a more imersive experience. Piped music played a medley of railroad themed music and an enthusiastic guide was keen to point out everything and anything we passed. Although the journey through the Verde Canyon was pleasant and evoked a sense of the history of the area, the fact that you are doing it on an almost extinct mode of transport at a pace much slower than modern life was the real pleasure for me. This was a 4 hour journey (2 hours to the ghost town of Perkinsville and 2 hours back along the same track to Clarkdale) - 4 hours was just enough to enjoy the experience without it becoming wearying.

This is a round trip from Clarksdale to Perkinsville and back along the Verde River canyon. You cannot travel this area any other way so you get to see breathtakingly gorgeous bluffs that line the Verde river. First class service provided a nice free buffet and bottled water. Full bar service is available. Service was excellent and you were advised when ito go outside to an open car to take fantastic pictures. Each car had a bathroom. There are tables for two on the river (preferred) side of the train car. The other side consists of 2 small couches for for two that share a small coffee table.
