What To Expect

Atlantis Submarines Waikiki

The Atlantis submarine Hawaii adventure begins with a short (approximately 10 minutes) shuttle ride out to the submarine boarding site. Descending below, your time underwater on the Oahu submarine tour is around 45 minutes. Returning to the world above, your shuttle is waiting to return you to land. The Oahu submarine tour dive site is home to many Hawaiian fish, coral and turtles. On this truly eye-opening experience, you'll visit sunken ships, airplanes and other artificial reefs. The submarine has a spacious air-conditioned interior, large view ports and comfortable seating. If you haven't taken a trip to the bottom of the ocean before, the Atlantis Submarine Oahu Adventure is a "must do" for the whole family during your visit to Hawaii. Check out the world's largest hi-tech 64-passenger submarine offers an enhanced amount of personal space and large viewports only available to Premium Tour passengers.

I dropped $150 for a short scenic boat ride and bragging rights that I spent 35 minutes up to 100 ft down to see underwater views of man made reefs with a some small fish swimming the wrecks. I can appreciate the expense Atlantis went to for the shuttle boat and the unique sub but I regret what I spent for so little return. To add insult to injury we were 15 minutes late in departing due to a malfunctioning toilet. Guess where the 15 minutes was deducted? If you guess in the time spent underwater you win. Although the paying customers got less than full value the staff made no attempt to compensate, (free soft drink, etc?). Once on you are herded down one side or the other. Unfortunately you have no option to avoid those you might want to. The family to one side of me had a mom with a hoarse cough and sneezed openly a couple of times. The shared air space is perhaps 1/2 of that of a small airliner. Not a mistake I would make again.

We took our grandson to Oahu with us for his birthday and he researched and told us he really wanted to do this excursion. I wasn't expecting much but it turned out to be pretty cool. The boat ride out to where they keep the sub was easy. The sub itself was plenty roomy. Our grandson had never been in anything like this so he was fascinated with all the underwater life and the sunken items (some of which were placed there for the excursion). It doesn't matter which side of the sub you sit on because it turns around so that everyone gets to see everything. Overall, it was worth the cost.

The Atlantis Submarine Adventure starts with a ten or fifteen minute ride on a surface ship out to where the submarine is located. The views from the surface ship were terrific: Waikiki, Diamond Head, Kapiolani Park. Then we boarded the submarine. On the dive we saw sunken ships and airplanes. They had been deliberately placed on the floor of the ocean to create artificial reefs. Fish congregated in busy communities around the wrecks. The sandy bottom in between these sites was pretty much empty. We went down to 114 feet. That's pretty deep. Scuba divers have to decompress when they go down that low. We ended our experience with another surface ship ride, again enjoying the scenery of the local area. This is well worth doing.
