Great trip guide was very cool and did not rush us @ all. There is quite a bit of rowing involved up and down the river- while there are typically two to a canoe, if both of you are not rowing, makes it difficult to traverse the distance.

During our stay in Kauai our family (2 adults, 2 teens) went on a kayaking/hiking trip to Uluwehi waterfalls. The trip is a 4 hour experience, which includes about 2 miles of kayaking on the Wailua river, followed by 1 to 1.5 mile hike to the waterfall. Our guide, Brian, was excellent. He would constantly tell us stories about the island, the history of the villages and about the hike itself. He was fun, knowledgeable and extremely helpful. Prior to the trip we forgot to take our phone with us, so he took numerous photos and a video of us swimming in the lake, created by the waterfall. We didn't even ask him for the video, but it's something he did on his own. The kayaking was fun, the river was getting narrower and narrower and at one point we were completely surrounded by vegetation from the shore. The hike was during mostly dry weather, but it did rain a bit. However, since that side of the island experiences a lot of rain, the train was completely muddy. We were told to "embrace the mud", in order not to fall down, and stay in the mud. That made our hike very unusual and a lot of fun. Wear water shoes for the mud!!! I think that's better than sneakers, boots or crocks. At the end of the hike, we came to a beautiful waterfall and a surrounding pond. We took a swim in it. Brian recommended getting into a niche behind the waterfall, which we did. It was very exhillirating. The wind from the water fall and the spray took our breath away, but we and our kids loved it. Overall, thanks to the beauty of the trial and Brian's guidance, this made for a memorable trip. And, the final bonus -- the trip cost us $39 per person, which is one of the cheapest attractions on the island!!!!. I strongly recommend this to any one, who does not have small children. LOVED IT!!! Again, KUDOS to our guide BRIAN -- he was the best!!!

I really liked this scrappy, no frills, no fuss expedition. It's a lot cheaper than some of the others but offers a unique adventure that is ultimately very satisfying. We kayaked a couple of miles up the wide Wailua River (no mean feat for an inexperienced kayaker), then tromped for a mile in some of the muddiest terrain I've ever encountered. It was slippery, especially on the inclines, but kind of fun, too. Our guide was really laid back but I always felt like he was paying attention and helpful to anyone who needed it. The big payoff came when we reached the Uluwehi Falls! There were other groups there, so its nickname as the Secret Falls is a little misleading, but it is amazing. We swam straight under the falls and stood behind them. The water drops seem to float for a second because of the extreme pressure. It was a wonderful experience for me and the kids. The hike back to the canoes was muddy, of course, and then when we were kayaking back we hit a rain storm on the river with some surprisingly strong winds. But when we finished I felt that we had really done something. It is really bare bones: no snacks, no water, no towels, but we all had a great time. And slept very well that night!
