This tour is a great value!
First: I didn't realize the term ālarge airboat tourā term had a specific meaning. There is a large airboat tour and a small airboat tour. The small airboat accommodates nine people. The large accommodates many more. We were fortunate enough to upgrade to the small airboat, which allowed up a more personalized and intimate experience. We paid a cash price of 15 dollars each for the upgrade, but card price is more. The small airboat usually costs more than 80 dollars per person retail.
We caught a bus from a local hotel, the closest one to our air bnb, but I found out later the bus will pick you up from other sites if itās near their hotel route and if you let them know ahead of time. Pickup is generally around 8-8:30.
First, the bus was very comfortable. Brian was our bus driver and he was a lot of fun! He pointed out interesting sites as we drove to the Whitney plantation and made a lot of jokes. He was great! Tip your driver, yaāll!
Our first stop was the Whitney plantation, which retails at 22 dollars and some change. This is the only plantation to my knowledge that focuses on the life of the enslaved. It was solemn, poignant, and moving. Several original and salvaged structures and many beautiful and heartbreaking art pieces. The gift shop there is awesome and full of informative books and African art.
Between the Whitney and the airboat tour, there was a quick (30 minutes) stop for lunch at another local plantation. All sandwiches, chips, ice cream, some cakes and pies.
The airboat tour was next, and was through Ragin Cajun tours. Our captain was knowledgeable and fun. A few of us got to feed raw chicken to gators. This airboat tour is a little different than some others weāve taken because itās not just on the main bayou, but also takes you through the beautiful marsh lands. Again, the small tour was better than the large boat tour, and was valued at over 80 dollars.
Brian picked us back up after the airboat tour and dropped us off at our respective destinations. The whole day was essentially 8-5. And again, taking the regular price into account, that plus transportation, makes this a great value.
