Yellowstone's Fairy Falls And Imperial Geyser Hike

Overview
Fairy Falls is Yellowstone's most popular hike, and you can add on another trail from there to Imperial Geyser, which is surrounded by a particularly beautiful pool! The hike takes five to six hours, from West Yellowstone.

Crossing the Firehole River, we'll walk through the Midway Geyser Basin, coming across a few smaller hot springs, until we see steam billowing off both Grand Prismatic Spring and Excelsior Geyser Crater.

After passing the rear of Grand Prismatic, we'll take a side trail to Fairy Falls, through a forest of new growth lodgepole pine trees. From Fairy Falls we'll make our way across a creek towards Imperial Geyser.

The trail is pretty deserted now, as we meander in and out of forests, and across an open plain. We'll eat our sack lunches at the colorful Imperial Geyser, hopefully watching it erupt as we do so! Spray Geyser is visited on the way back.

The hike is about six miles (9.6 kilometres) round trip.

At least half the group must have bear spray!

What To Expect
1
Fairy Falls
Fairy Falls is one of Yellowstone's more popular waterfalls. It is about 200 feet (61 metres) high. You'll have time to explore the Fairy Falls, area, and the pool which has formed underneath it.
2
Grand Prismatic Spring
Imperial Geyser and Grand Prismatic Spring are two of the highlights of this hike. Imperial Geyser is being included under Grand Prismatic Spring, as Viator doesn't have it as a landmark in their system. Imperial Geyser is located in a very pretty pool of brilliant blue, with bright colors around the edges. The bacteria mats which flow off the pool present a particularly vibrant palette of colors. We'll check out Grand Prismatic Spring from many vantage points on the trail to Fairy Falls, and see the huge clouds of steam which billow off Grand Prismatic and Excelsior Geyser.
