I would like to clarify a few things for people looking at this tour so you are aware of what you are signing up for. I am not much of a camper, but with a guided camping tour, I did expect something else.
The camp site is in an RV parking lot alongside a road about 15 minutes outside of Yosemite. It is not pretty or natural. There are working restrooms. The showers did not work when we were there. There was no hot water to wash the dishes we used to prepare raw chicken for the tacos.
You set up your own tents, etc, and cook your own meals, and clean up after you cook. You set up camp.
Our guide did drive, and she did a nice job getting us to good points in Yosemite, although I think she was very new at the tour guiding business.
What I think their website should clarify, is that our guide expected a 15-25% gratuity per person on the price of the tour. And she was very open about it. In addition to the bus having a sign we saw every time we were in it, she asked for the tip when we were about 20 minutes from drop-off. She even let us know there was an ATM in the hotel where we were being dropped off.
It really rubbed me the wrong way. I'm not sure if she is to blame, there really is no good way to ask for a tip, but if the guide is relying on the tip for this job to have a livable wage, the company should build that in, instead of low-balling the price and putting their guides and guests in that position at the end of the trip.
The other campers on our trip were wonderful. We did enjoy getting to know them.
