LA Food Tour: Explorer la frontière culinaire américaine avec les ruelles culinaires

Aperçu
Nobody walks in LA? Prepare to challenge your expectations and preconceptions as we wind our way through Downtown Los Angeles on foot. The City of Angels is vast and sprawling, to be sure, a world city and global hub that boasts the busiest port in the western hemisphere and a local economy rivaled only by New York and Tokyo. Yet strolling through its dense core, where it all began hundreds of years ago alongside the LA River, Los Angeles still feels like a western outpost – forward looking, experimental, and adventuresome, especially when it comes to eating. Our food journey may seem extensive, but it’s truly only a taste of the banquet laid out for the bold, the curious, and the intrepid as they continue to explore the seemingly boundaryless City of Angels.

Although it is expensive, this tour was amazing! Our guide, Ulysses, had extensive knowledge of the history, culture, and food in the downtown Los Angeles area. He spent approximately five hours with us. From start to finish, we walked a total of about 6 miles. The food itself was sourced from local mom and pop businesses with an interest in supporting small local businesses that have had a presence in downtown Los Angeles For many years. We hit all the highlights and more. Although I am a Los Angeles native, I learned so much about my beloved city. It was also great to be amongst and learn from all the diverse communities that exist in downtown Los Angeles. We went through Chinatown, Aloe Vera St., Little Tokyo, Grand Central market, the oldest house and the oldest fire station in Los Angeles. The tour ended in Grand Central market with us having the best tacos I’ve ever had from Villa Tacos, which has one best taco at the taco madness contest many years in a row. Love and highly recommend it!

This is a deep dive into some of the tastiest and deepest-rooted institutions of LA’s Chinatown, Little Tokyo, and Olvera Street. Our guide Ulysses was deeply knowledgeable about the history and culture of the establishments and neighborhoods. It’s like getting to do a food tour and an accessible post-graduate course all at once. We appreciated getting to visit a few museums along the way to break up the eating and learn even more. We were already familiar with many of the Asian foods sampled, but the versions presented on this tour were all outstanding. Some were either the best or at the same level as the best examples we have encountered in the past. The overall quantity of food was manageable, especially if you don’t eat every bit of all the foods presented. Some people could probably eat it all. Ulysses was good about setting the expectations about pacing, and also made sure hydration and bathroom opportunities were more than adequate. For those concerned about safety, I would say the route was pretty benign. One needs to be aware of their surroundings in any big city, but I didn’t have any special concerns. Overall, it is an easy recommendation to anyone who wants more out of a food tour.
