LA Food Tour: Explorer la frontière culinaire américaine avec les ruelles culinaires

Aperçu
Nobody walks in LA? Prepare to challenge your expectations and preconceptions as we wind our way through Downtown Los Angeles on foot. The City of Angels is vast and sprawling, to be sure, a world city and global hub that boasts the busiest port in the western hemisphere and a local economy rivaled only by New York and Tokyo. Yet strolling through its dense core, where it all began hundreds of years ago alongside the LA River, Los Angeles still feels like a western outpost – forward looking, experimental, and adventuresome, especially when it comes to eating. Our food journey may seem extensive, but it’s truly only a taste of the banquet laid out for the bold, the curious, and the intrepid as they continue to explore the seemingly boundaryless City of Angels.

LA's charm can require a curated approach, and this tour would be a great introduction for the uninitiated. That said, those of us who have lived in LA for years also can learn plenty of cultural information and enjoy delicious treats at local-owned bistros, tea shops, bakeries, and stands under the skillful guiding of Ulysses. This tour is on par with the several Culinary Backstreets tours I did in Europe. Definitely recommended.

Ulysses was an amazing guide (and a super fun companion too). Although I've lived in Los Angeles for over 50 years, I gained a new appreciation for our city, its rich cultural and culinary diversity, and its unique history. I was less familiar with the culinary opportunities in Chinatown so especially enjoyed that part of the tour, although it was all great. Also, despite having visited both Olvera Street and Bunker Hill numerous times in the past, I'd never visited the Avila Adobe or taken Angel's Flight. These stops added greatly to the tour.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful feedback! Ulysses is great! Each of our culinary walks is the outcome of considerable research. We work with academics in the field and our own team of experienced professionals – both guides and local journalists. We are very proud to support businesses that we believe in, helping to preserve the social and cultural fabric of cities like Los Angeles that we love so dearly. Most importantly, of course, we take pride in working with people who are very knowledgeable about and extremely fond of the cities they live in. You can check out your Culinary Backstreets Passport on our website to see the stamps you have collected. We hope to see you again soon in one of our cities.

My partner and I are relatively new locals to the city and absolutely relished this tour as a way to get to know the history, community, and amazing food in the area much more intimately, and we could not recommend more to others wishing to do the same! We were blown away by the background and education of our guide, Ulysses, who integrated his knowledge and connection to the city as a native of LA, local filmmaker, and current grad student of sociocultural anthropology. Between his unique perspective and the clear amount of thought, research, and community involvement that goes into the agenda, the tour far exceeded any other food tour we've experienced elsewhere, and we thought a very worthy use of our money. We already cannot wait to find other Culinary Backstreets experiences wherever we go!
