Our driver Byrne met us at the dock, drove us to a small place in town where we picked up rubber boats to wear and took us up the scenic highway (about 45 mins) to meet up with our float raft. The raft was well equipped and we were given life preservers to wear and a safety talk before launching. Rain ponchos were available on the raft, if needed. We already had on waterproof rain pants from our ship's expedition department prior to getting on the raft. Steve was our float guide and eight of us took off with him for a very pleasant 1.5 hour float trip on the river through the preserve. We saw lots of Bald Eagles and their huge nests. Steve was very knowledgeable and a great raft guide as he navigated the river so gently. He shared his knowledge of the river and the eagles with us, which was wonderful. Bring your binoculars and if you are a photographer, a zoom lens would enable you to photograph the eagles high up in the trees. The surrounding panoramic landscape of mountains is beautiful scenery.

Once we exited the Cruise Ship, we were met right outside the exit ramp. The person we needed to meet was holding a sign with a big Rainbow on it, can't miss it. Escorted us to a bus which drove us to the ferry. Took the ferry trip to Haines. We then were met with another Rainbow sign outside of the ramp and walked to the area to get rain boots. Took a bus out to the launching point. Our tour guide Steve took our family of five down the river on a raft. It was a very private tour down the river, just Steve and our family. No white water so no real danger of falling in or getting wet. Steve was very knowledgeable about the environment, the history of the river, and Haines. He encouraged questions which I took full advantage of. Great bang for the buck and safe. A basic brown bag lunch was provided and they were very aware of the time to ensure you get back to the ferry when needed. Although we only saw eagles, really enjoyed the private tour down the river.

My wife and I wanted to have a 'wilderness' experience while here. Byrne and 'Danger' Dave took great care of us. Byrne is a 22 year resident of Haines. Very knowledgeable about the area. Shared many of his experiences. Dave was a great guide. Taught us a lot about the river and also bald eagles. Helped us spot eagles and nests along the way. Got us as close as he could to them. Made navigating the river look easy. Also avoided the '10 mile' route. LOL The weather in the morning was ominous and our excursion was delayed due to the ferry to Haynes being cancelled in the morning. But we heard the weather was going to improve so we decided to go forward with the raft float and glad we did. The weather turned out to be gorgeous and the float was relaxing and beautiful. Even though the river was moving along, there was no real 'white water'. Relatively relaxing (at least Dave made it look that way). Binoculars would be recommended. I had a powerful zoom on my camera to get in close
