What an incredible experience! Garl is a true man of the woods. His knowledge of, and love for the Everglades is palpable; his enthusiasm is infectious: his confidence is inspiring. It needs to be. Why else would we have followed him, knee deep into the waters of the Everglades, there to discover a wonder world unimaginable from the roads edge a short distance away? Why else would we have paddled to within a few yards of a basking, 14 foot long crocodile, eaten the roots of a reed, sampled a wild fruit? Garl regaled us with tales of catching pythons with his bare hands, starring in Richard Attenborough’s nature shows and the exploits of Croczilla and the various alligators, all of whom have names like Princess or Snaggletooth. He patiently explained how a fractional, natural increase or decrease in the water level has a dramatic effect on the flora and fauna, causing areas to expand and contract continuously. We came away exhausted but intensely happy with a newfound knowledge and respect for the Everglades’ extraordinary ecosystem. Highly recommended.
