This was a first class tour that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting NYC. It runs for roughly half a day and cost USD 65. On the way back the bus driver was happy to drop some of us off at locations on the way (I got off near Central Park near the Museum of Natural History). Our tour guide Anthony was an Italian American New York local whose knowledge of the city and its history was mind-boggling (he even told us about his own experiences in the Big Apple, having grown up in Harlem e.g. he was once robbed as a kid on W 139th Street/Strivers Row and had his sneakers stolen!). The tour went like this: •Check in to the Harlem Spirituals office on 8th Avenue and the head to the bus around the corner parked on West 44th Street •Head down 8th avenue and down Central Park West into Harlem •Go past key landmarks such as Columbia University, Riverside Church, , City College, George Washington bridge, Alexander Hamilton’s house (the famous politician killed by his colleague as depicted in the Broadway musical Hamilton) – the tour guide does a fabulous job of explaining each of the sites. You will also learn how Harlem has evolved over the years from being segregated and dangerous to being a relatively safe neighbourhood nowadays. •Stop off in downtown Harlem for a walk down the main street where the Apollo Theatre sits (famous theatre which holds the renowned Amateur Night, which started the careers of numerous African American entertainers such as Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones and Chaka Khan). You get free time to walk around for 10-15 minutes near James Brown Way •Stop at a popular Housing area where some of the famous black stars grew up back in the day (it was then unknown for black people to live in Midtown or lower Manhattan) •Off to the church for the main event, a church service with gospel As for the main event itself, the Gospel church service at the Greater Highway Deliverance Temple (pastor, Liston Page) was some kind of wonderful. From the moment we walked in you could feel the spirit and energy in the room and it never wavered throughout the whole service. And the vocal skills of some of the singers was amazing. We were all on our feet in awe of the pure joy that pulsated through the church for a good portion of the hour we were inside. Even just looking around the church at the worshippers getting into the music was a thrill to see. Note, there is no photography permitted once you enter the church and do contribute to the donation basket that goes around, all money goes to local charities. Also, if you are a movie buff like me, you’ll love the tour as on the way back the guide pointed out several locations where iconic scenes from films where shot such as: •The scene in ‘The Godfather’ where Sonny beats Connie’s husband •The pool house shoot em up scene in ‘Carlito’s Way’ •Filming locations for ‘New Jack City’ He also pointed out Yankee Stadium, explained the story behind NYC become known as the ‘Big Apple’ (it’s to do with horse breeding/racing) and gave everyone some local tips for the best pizza and hamburgers in NYC (Don Antonio on 50th St between 8th & 9th) and the best bars (Rum House on 44th was mentioned). We also found out the corner in NYC with the highest crime rate (cnr 122nd and Madison Ave) and learnt that it is normal to double park in the street illegally on Sunday given the huge line ups of people attending church. It isn’t uncommon for drivers to leave notes in the windscreen saying “Don’t tow me, I’m in Church”. All in all this was an excellent tour and if you can get Anthony as your guide you will be in good hands.

we done this tour thinking it was on a bus and dropped off at a church. How wrong were we DAMIEN are.rour guide was amazing the knowledge he has is outstanding, he was very friendly and the information he gives right through the tour is a must to.listen too . deffo a must see. The choir werw outstanding brought tears to my eyes
