A must see if you are in Seward. We saw orcas, humpbacks, sea lions, sea otters, eagles and all kinds of birds. The glacier viewing was amazing especially when we spent a lot of time at the base of Alieuk Glacier.

We did the National Park tour with Major Marine Tours. There was a Kenai Fjords park ranger on the boat and did most of the commentary along with the ship captain. Our kids were able to complete some pages in a free workbook and were sworn in as "Junior Rangers" at the end of the boat ride. Our 6-hour tour had us seeing different birds native to the area (including puffins) and the ship captain had a keen eye for spotting Orcas (Killer Whales) and grey whales and got us as close to possible to them. The Aialik Glacier was amazing, with large pieces of the glacier breaking off (calving) into the bay. This makes a thunder-like sound when a big piece falls off! There is ice chunks floating in the bay, and seals laying on those ice chunks! The captain also brought us to a small island that had some penquin-like birds and seals. The all-you-can-eat buffet was good. We did travel quite fast on the boat for some of the way and the water was choppy so take your Dramamine or Bonine before you leave! I also learned that the back of the boat was the best place to stand during the bumpy part of the ride. It is also quite chilly, even on a sunny day when the boat is moving fast and when near the glacier - so hats and gloves and several layers (long sleeves, a sweatshirt and a windbreaker) are recommended. Our tour gave us a nice souvenir book about the area too.

We did this trip the morning before we boarded our cruise ship. With the exception of our very, very unpleasant driver who picked us up at our hotel to transfer us to the tour center, our trip was amazing. Our driver was rude and refused to answer a few questions we, inexperienced travelers, had. So, here are the questions you need answered if you have luggage and are going on a cruise afterwards: 1) Alaska Collection will pick you up from your hotel and take you to your ship 2) They will store your baggage at their office and/or transfer your luggage to your ship 3) Beware, you need to have all of your cruise tags on your bags prior to going on the Kenai Fjords trip 4) We were not told this, but Alaska Collection, by Pursuit, takes your luggage to the cruise dock, where the cruise staff loads your baggage onto the ship. YOU DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR BAGS AGAIN, so make sure to keep your boarding documents and passports with you. Now, onto the boat tour - the scenery was breathtaking. The fog parted and we enjoyed views of mountains, cliffs, glaciers, seals, whales, otters, puffins, and remote islands. The staff was informative and provided information about what we were seeing. Lunch was wonderful - caesar salad wrap unless you order a hummus wrap for vegetarians. The warm cookies as you cruise back to the port were wonderful.
