Adventures on the Gorge

Meet your rafting trip leader at the departure point. You will listen to a brief orientation and get your gear (personal flotation device, helmet and paddle). Then, you will have a 30-minute ride on a school bus down to the river put-in. Your guide will go over additional instructions once you get in the raft. The trip begins with a few smaller class I-III rapids as you ease into paddling and working as a team. Then, you hit some bigger rapids rated class IV-V. About half way through the trip, your trip will pull over and eat a deli-style lunch on the shore. After lunch, you will continue downstream into the heart of the Gorge. Here you’ll go through several rapids rated class III-V. Between rapids, there is time for swimming, floating and maybe (based on water levels) jumping off of rocks. The trip ends just past the New River Gorge Bridge.

The area is absolutely beautiful. We lived in the PNW and this part of the world beats it! The rafting trip was pretty intense, but amazing. On the other hand, the food was terrible and over priced. The point of sale computers were down when it was time to settle up this past Friday. We stood there waiting for a good 30mins waiting on them to figure it out. They didn't and comped the meal. In addition, our neighbors went to one of the restaurants and the cooks walked out during their appetizer. We obviously ate elsewhere after this experience. During Memorial Day weekend no less. It's a shame.

We had a great time with our guide, Scott E., who skillfully took us through the more challenging parts of the rapids because our raft had capable paddlers. Sitting in the front will definitely get you wet and you should bring a pair of shoes that you don't mind getting soaked. There is a good mix of rapids and floating time. The lunch was good, too.

My son and I stayed at the Adventures on the Gorge resort and rafted on the Lower New River in late April 2023. It had rained recently and the river was up 10-12 feet and flowing fast. Big water and very exciting! It was colder than we expected and we would have been warmer with a hat and gloves. The best part was the service provided by so many of the employees. The alternator in our car "died" just as we arrived on a Saturday and everyone was incredibly helpful. Ty and Shawna immediately asked Jim and Hound Dog to come by with jumper boxes and test equipment to figure out the alternator would likely need to be replaced. On Monday, Jim called a local garage to ask if they could repair the alternator, but the garage said they could not do it. Then Jim drove us 35 minutes to a U-Haul location where we rented a truck with a car trailer and drove to our next destination. The car trouble could have ruined the trip, but we stayed an extra night and they all helped make our visit as good as it could have been under the circumstances. The river guides, Doug and Marcus were great - lots of entertaining stories and fun in the rapids. Carole drove the bus and was very nice keeping the heat on HIGH after our trip down the river. All in all, Adventures on the Gorge is a great organization with exceptionally friendly and helpful people. I'm glad we went and would definitely recommend it to others!
