Adventures on the Gorge

Meet your rafting trip leader at the departure point. You will listen to a brief orientation and get your gear (personal flotation device, helmet and paddle). Then, you will have a 30-minute ride on a school bus down to the river put-in. Your guide will go over additional instructions once you get in the raft. The trip begins with a few smaller class I-III rapids as you ease into paddling and working as a team. Then, you hit some bigger rapids rated class IV-V. About half way through the trip, your trip will pull over and eat a deli-style lunch on the shore. After lunch, you will continue downstream into the heart of the Gorge. Here you’ll go through several rapids rated class III-V. Between rapids, there is time for swimming, floating and maybe (based on water levels) jumping off of rocks. The trip ends just past the New River Gorge Bridge.

We thoroughly enjoyed the 4 days we spent at Adventures on the Gorge. We rented a small one BR + loft cottage at their location near Fayette, WV. The cottage was clean, well kept, and included an outdoor hot tub on the front porch. Our 6 hour white-water rafting excursion on the New River was every bit as much fun and exciting as hoped. The river guide, Mogul Mike, expertly coached the eight of us on the raft to the correct and safe entry points to the class 3-5 rapids we encountered. A shore lunch was served along the way. It was truly a day to remember!

We had a really fun trip. We stayed in the Sportsmen 3 Cabin (#22). It looks exactly the same in person as it does on the website. It was great for our needs. We weren’t going to be hanging out in the cabin so we didn’t need a lot of space. We played paint ball, disc golf, swam in the pool, ate at two of the restaurants, and did the Lower New Whitewater rafting. All of our experiences were very good. My husband did not have a good experience after eating at Smokey’s (he does not have food sensitivity normally). It was the first day they were open for the season. The three of us were fine though. All the staff were nice, I think the paintball course should be bigger, it felt limiting but we still had a blast. The whitewater rafting trip was amazing! I was scared at first but wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought. Our guide Justin was awesome. So intelligent in regards to the wildlife. The only cons I have are: there was some litter on the disc golf course and it smelled like sewage when walking to the first hole. Employees were vaping while working. The cabin was a little dusty on the wall edges and behind the bed I found a cigarette butt (I don’t smoke). Everything else was very clean. I reported it to the front desk. The beds were comfy. The twin bed is not ideal for an older teen. My son is only 5’10” and he ended up sleeping on the futon couch downstairs, which was very thick and comfy. I only disclose these slight issues to provide full disclosure as that’s what I like when reading reviews. We really had a blast! The place was great and I would definitely go back!
