Very good trip. You meet a guide at the beginning, before you get on the boat. They guide will tell you about the trip and explain a little history but not too much. They the guide will take you to the boat and get you through the ticket office. Once he gets you past the ticket inspection, he leaves and you get on the boat on your own. Both at Liberty island, and at Ellis island, there are free audio guide that you get and learn about the place. We went at 1pm and it took us 4 hrs to see. This is plenty of time to take your time and look around.

Glad to hear you had a great trip! Sounds like the guide provided just the right amount of information before letting you explore at your own pace. The free audio guides at Liberty and Ellis Island are definitely a great resource for learning more. Four hours seems like a perfect amount of time to take it all in. Hope you had a memorable experience!

The weather was superb, the tour guide was very informative. Be aware you have to go through a security control - so do not bring your pocket knives
