Amelia Island is full of rich history, and is the only location in America to have flown 8 independent flags. It’s rich history takes us on a journey through time including the Timucuan Indians who were our first inhabitants as far back as 2000 BC. The flags tell the story of religious struggle and persecution, the effect of Christianity disallowing any other God to be worshiped. The devastating impact of the Revolutionary war on the island and rebels acting in the name of higher power. Smugglers, slave traders and pirates have all had a part to play in the evolution of this Islands growth. This fascinating tour will take you on a journey through time and show you how such a small barrier island has had a major and little know impact on the history of America. We have taken walking tours of the area, which piqued our curiosity to learn even more about this significant part of Florida. We decided to try a mobile tour covering more territory to round out the history of Amelia Island. WOW! We were in for a truly fascinating 'journey' with tour guide Daniel. Through his delightful narrative, he wove the historic threads of the many entities involved into a rich tapestry. We were amazed by the level of research that had to be done to deliver such a fascinating account of the periods under the "Eight Flags". Don't miss Daniel's tour - It's a gem!

We called at the last minute and joined the afternoon tour. You are on the van the whole 90 minutes - no walking - which was fine for us on a chilly afternoon. You just sit back in comfort and enjoy the ride - and the guide. Daniel shares history both large (gruesome massacres of the French colonists by the Spanish) and small (the nuns hiding a drunken Father Halligan from the bishop). He also discusses the local economy and industries, so you really get a sense of the place. Highly recommended.
