We chose First Class for air conditioning and to guarantee plenty of leg-room for my 6' 4" husband. We were assigned the Yavapai car which had very comfortable reclining seats with plenty of leg room. Our attendant "Conarae" (not sure if I got this right) was friendly, fun and attentive without being over-bearing. She was also very knowledgeable of the history of the railroad and the Grand Canyon. She provided interesting details and information pointing out landmarks on the way up to the canyon. Her laugh was very unique and something she will be remembered for. As for the value received...... I would not recommend first class due to the cost. A few donuts, coffee, water and soda on the way up and a small vegetable/cheese offering on the way back does not merit the $79 per person upcharge and definitely does not meet first class standards. I recommend the Coach class as it seemed roomy enough and was air conditioned. The cowboy skit was OK for kids. The 3 hrs at the Canyon was plenty of time but overnight stay and return the next day would be great too. Overall we recommend the Grand Canyon Railway. Just skip first class cost....Go coach and save your money for a good lunch at the Grand Canyon's Harvey House Cafe

The train ride with a great host and musical entertainment plus the bush rangers and the hold-up were all highlights. Plus the Grand Canyon of course! Take some lunch with you and avoid the queues!

I confess to landing somewhere between 3 and 4 stars on this one. We splurged on the Fred Harvey dome car round-trip but wouldn't do that again. The car attendant worked hard, kept up a constant cheery and informative patter (almost too much at times), served drinks both ways, regularly checked on everyone's comfort, and not making the drive ourselves from Williams to Grand Canyon is a boon. But four hours of the same scenery both ways gets old and the drinks and snacks, while generous, just don't justify the expense of this ticket level; we could have brought snacks and/or purchased things in the cafe car. The entertainment -- a few minutes each way of the cowboy singers who perform on the platform while the train gets ready in the morning -- felt unnecessary, and also we felt compelled to give them a gratuity. Same for the gag cowboys robbing the train on the return trip felt forced and silly, especially in our no-kids-allowed car -- we felt pressured to be "robbed" and hand over some more dollars. All in all, maybe better with kids in one of the less costly cars.
