This has been on my bucket list for a while, no longer do I have to envy colleagues who have visited. Having a family with growing children meant that considerations were made for our family holiday and often that meant a resort in the sun. This year, despite the children being grown they still enjoy the theme parks of Florida, however, this year we added a trip to New York. The city certainly was a Wonderful Town and lived up to our expectations. It doesn't have the historic beauty of most European cities, however, it does have it's own beauty and charm. Although we were there for 5 days we did not get to see everything and all the family intend to return. The City Pass was really helpful in not only providing access to some wonderful experiences it helped in finding them. Brilliant. My only issue was in getting the pass with my voucher. Our hotel was near the Empire State and as were not intending to visit it that day, due to the weather, we wanted to exchange our voucher for passes and the offers within. This proved to be an issue as we had to queue and go through security and the lower exhibition before getting to the ticket counter. Not a major issue but a wasted hour on a busy visit. Better access please.

We decided to get the C3 pass to gain entry to Empire State, Intrepid Sea, Air and Space and 9/11 Museum. We already had Statue of Liberty advanced crown tickets and as we have been to NYC before, we decided to prioritise our favourite places and places we hadn’t visited. I had looked into the different passes a lot before travelling and knew that they didn’t provide skip the line into the attractions and museums, but decided that as it would save about £50 between 4 of us it would be worth it, especially if we tried to avoid the busiest times. Empire State - visited Christmas Day at around 8:30am - minimal queues - couldn’t skip the line as such, but didn’t have to queue to exchange for an entry ticket, we were able to just scan mobile ticket at the entry barrier. Empire State is for 86th Floor, but you can upgrade to 102nd floor when you get there. Intrepid Sea, Air and Space - visited Christmas Eve early morning - minimal queues - couldn’t skip the line as such, but we were in a different queue to the people buying tickets, so was quicker than buying ticket on the day. Our mobile tickets were scanned and exchanged for entry tickets. 9/11 - visited 23rd Dec in the afternoon about 3pm - minimal queues - couldn’t skip the line as such, but we were in a different queue to the people buying tickets and we didn’t have to exchange for an entry ticket, we were able to just scan mobile ticket at the entry barrier. Even people with pre-purchased entry tickets at all 3 attractions we visited had to join the same queues as us CityPASS ticket holders. Only people who had paid extra to skip the lines were able to get in before everyone else. So I think if you’re not able to afford the considerable add on for skip the line tickets and the CityPASS will save you money on the attractions you want to visit, then it can be worth it. For us, we were lucky with the times we went. We saw much longer queues on our way out of places, so it is definitely worth going to attractions very early in the day. We didn’t go to Top of the Rock as we have been before and wanted to see the new Empire State exhibition, but at TofR you can go online and secure timed ticket entry.

I researched a lot and wavered on the practicality of the City Pass for NYC. I was sold after reading the comments on Trip Advisors and other sites. We got the 5 events pass. Statue of Liberty: we had to wait in a separate long line to get the pass scanned then get tickets in order to wait in an even longer line to board. Next time, would have booked a few months in advance through the national parks site and try to get to go up to the crown or pedestal. The CityPass does not allow for these extra options. Or we could have booked it the day before for a specific time to board and wouldn’t have waited in line as line. Can buy the audio tour there. Ticket includes the ferry. Empire State: same here as well. An extra line to scan pass for tickets. If booked ahead, could have gotten the express option and not wait in line. It’s self guided tour with all the displays before going to top. If going around this time, it’s cold and windy making it unpleasant for a lot of the cruises. Ice skating at famous Rockefeller Center not included. Kinda disappointed. Hop on Hop off. Those buses that you see everywhere. Those are not included. What’s included in the “Big Bus” nightly tour in downtown. Can only pick it up at one area and only available for 2 hours. Very limited so we weren’t able to use it. Overall, it was a waste of money for our family of 4. It was very limited and made the trip a little more stressful than we wanted. After our experience at the two places, we gave up trying to go to anything else.
