The scenery begins to change as we increase in elevation and views of the cactus fade into pine trees. As we continue further into Northern Arizona, we will travel the outskirts of the Route 66 town of Flagstaff and from the highway, see the San Francisco Peaks among the seemingly endless Ponderosa Pine Forest, the largest contiguous forest of ponderosa pines in the world.

Williams will be our first stop along the tour for a chance to experience Route 66, the iconic American highway steeped in rich tradition. While in Williams, guests will have the opportunity to “get their kicks on Route 66” with walks along the original route, explore the local shops and capture souvenir photos highlighting a bygone era in classic American history. Also known as the Will Rodgers Highway, Route 66 is the most recognizable road in the United States and stretched 2,448 miles from Chicago to California upon completion.

This really is an all day tour, leaving from 6am and arriving back around 7pm but therefore gives you plenty of time to explore the Canyon's South Rim. Transport is a large and comfortable bus with plenty of space for the journey and bottled water provided. The first formal stop is Williams, Az for an hour on Route 66. Yes this is a tourist town, however, for visitors outside the US like myself it's part of folklore. It's quirky nature and attempts to keep it as a throwback make it worth the visit as don't think there will be many towns like that left some point soon. It's then another 50 minutes to the Grand Canyon where those not flying get about two hours to hit the trails or enjoy the village. Was great to have the freedom to walk and explore rather then led. From the village there are two further stops further east for half hour spans for different viewpoints. It's a long travel day but a pretty much stress free way to view the Canyon with friendly guides and regular stops if required. Watch out for some wildlife too, amazing to see a few bald eagles by the side of the road.
