After departing the Phoenix metro area, our tour travels through the expansive Sonoran Desert filled with the native saguaro cactus. The scenery begins to change as we increase in elevation and views of the cactus fade into pine trees. As we continue further into Northern Arizona, we will travel the outskirts of the Route 66 town of Flagstaff and from the highway, see the San Francisco Peaks among the seemingly endless Ponderosa Pine Forest, the largest contiguous forest of ponderosa pines in the world.

Williams will be our first stop along the tour for a chance to experience Route 66, the iconic American highway steeped in rich tradition. While in Williams, guests will have the opportunity to “get their kicks on Route 66” with walks along the original route, explore the local shops and capture souvenir photos highlighting a bygone era in classic American history. Also known as the Will Rodgers Highway, Route 66 is the most recognizable road in the United States and stretched 2,448 miles from Chicago to California upon completion.

Justin did an outstanding job as our tour guide. Not only did he give us tons of information on the flora and fauna in the area, but he also had a great amount of historical knowledge of the area. We were lucky enough to see Mule Deer, Elk, and the Mules used to ride to the bottom of the canyon. A bonus was that we passed the Planters mobile on the road to the Grand Canyon!! We thoroughly enjoyed this tour and would highly recommend it to anyone. The next time we visit Arizona we plan on taking another DETOURS trip.

I was fortunate to travel with Mike for the Grand Canyon tour to explore the South Rim with a stop at Williams on Route 66 on the way. Mike was extremely knowledgeable and personable. He arrived to pick us up right on time at 6:40 am and ensured that all his 11 travellers were comfortable for the ride. While it was a full day, Mike was so willing to answer questions and provide stories which made the time fly by. We all opted for the boxed lunch option and it was very tasty and a generous amount of food. Eating in the "turtle" van gave us more time at the Grand Canyon rather than wasting an hour in a restaurant. Our first glimpse of the Grand Canyon was indescribable and magical. Mike's expert guidance both before turning us loose explore the majestic site, made the whole experience stress-free and memorable. Our stop in the town of Williams on Route 66 was so much fun as well -- a piece of Western American history that's frozen in time. I highly recommend this tour!
