After departing the Phoenix metro area, our tour travels through the expansive Sonoran Desert filled with the native saguaro cactus. The scenery begins to change as we increase in elevation and views of the cactus fade into pine trees. As we continue further into Northern Arizona, we will travel the outskirts of the Route 66 town of Flagstaff and from the highway, see the San Francisco Peaks among the seemingly endless Ponderosa Pine Forest, the largest contiguous forest of ponderosa pines in the world.

Williams will be our first stop along the tour for a chance to experience Route 66, the iconic American highway steeped in rich tradition. While in Williams, guests will have the opportunity to “get their kicks on Route 66” with walks along the original route, explore the local shops and capture souvenir photos highlighting a bygone era in classic American history. Also known as the Will Rodgers Highway, Route 66 is the most recognizable road in the United States and stretched 2,448 miles from Chicago to California upon completion.

My husband and I went on this day tour. It was great. The vehicle was comfortable and although there were no bathroom facilities on it, the driver made well-timed stops. The driver was very knowledgeable and was excellent all along the way with historical and geographic information. He was friendly and personable as well. It was a long day from Scottsdale but was very worthwhile!

This was just perfect for us as we only had one day after our business conference to explore from Phoenix. Our guide was super polite and knowledgeable. We were picked up promptly at our hotel and provided a couple bathroom stops on the way to Sedona so you were never uncomfortable. There was not much time for exploring Sedona but it was a worthwhile pit stop nonetheless. Then the stop in Williams was also short but sweet so that most of our time could be spent at the Grand Canyon. It was breathtaking! We spend 2 hours at one spot and 1 hour at another, so 3 total for the Grand Canyon. Then we stopped for the bathroom once on the way home and took a less scenic route to get back a little quicker. This was a full and blessed day! The van was clean and comfortable, the tour guide was informative and helpful, our picnic lunch was delicious, and there was plenty of water to drink too. Thank you Detours!

The best way to see Sedona and Grand Canyon. We were able to relax as Detours took care of everything. Our friends said we could do this tour by ourselves and that made it difficult to decide if we should spend money on tour guides but so glad we did. Detours helped in many ways that we would not have been as comfortable doing alone. They found great hotels and restaurants for us and planned out the perfect timing so we could see everything we wanted during the least crowded times. They also found best spots to get a perfect family photos and to see elk and other wildlife on our watch list, and they prepared us for the change in climate. The tour guides made the stops interesting and educational as they shared with us personal details of what it is really like to be a local and grow up and live in their towns. Before our trip started, Rachel was very helpful to move our tour date when we could not find a good flight and she also found a hotel for us on the Rim that had a last minute cancellation. Our driver from Phoenix to Sedona was our favorite tour guide of all. He was warm and caring, shared his knowledge with us and he was like an old friend, we really liked him. In Sedona, the tour guide helped us check in to the Orchard Inn, get lunch, took us on couple tours including a Broke Arrow Jeep tour, the views were amazing and then we had prickly pear cactus, fried rattlesnake and buffaloe for dinner at the Cowboy Club and enjoyed the hotel pool which also had amazing views. In Grand Canyon, our tour guide checked us into the Kachina Lodge, right on the rim with another amazing view of the Canyon, you just look down from your window and there it is. We enjoyed sunrise on the east rim with no people around. On the way back to Phoenix, we stopped at the Trading Post in Cameron and would not recommend that stop unless you are returning to Phoenix too late for dinner but otherwise you should request to skip that stop. It was a great trip and wished we could have stayed longer as there is so much to see. Everyone at Detours was helpful and friendly from the office staff to the tour guides, they went above and beyond to ensure we had an awesome family trip.
