Destrehan Plantation
1pm Departure Only - 5 1/2 hour tour Established in 1787, Destrehan is the oldest documented plantation home in the lower Mississippi Valley. It is also the closest to New Orleans. Built by Free Person Of Color Charles Pacquet, she has survived colonial and civil wars, occupation by the Union Army, abandonment, decay and restoration, and has now been preserved in all its glory for you to enjoy. A short drive away from the grand River Road, you'll experience another another side of Louisiana culture in the Manchac Swamp. The trip is well organized. We had a very knowledgeable and fun guide in John who took great care of us and was ready to answer any questions we had. My favorite part of the day was visiting the alligators. I felt secure in the boats provided and it seemed suitable for kids too. We even touched a baby alligator!

Organisation and timing really good. We received easy joining instructions and everything was on time. John was an informative and interesting tour guide with good humour throughout. The plantation was interesting but the house tour guide irritatingly patronising with thought only of her rushed schedule. Get the group in and out as quickly as possible. A plantation tour should not glorify the owners or seek to suggest that 200 years is a long time ago when the lessons of such recent history have still not been learned. Not diverse or inclusive. The swamp boat tour was very good with a guide with real character and interesting extras. Overall a good day out but it would have been better with some cultural diversity.

Thank you for your input. Oak Alley focuses on the home (architectural) and the surrounding grounds, rather on the inhabitants. We will mention the "rushed tour" to them. A highly recommended tour that relives those who lived and worked in the enslaved system, would be the Whitney Plantation, who opened and constructed a tour that raises those voices.

What a wonderful tour. Kate the guide was very knowledgeable almost too knowledgeable. The plantation was beautiful. The swamp tour was so fun. Captain Brandon was so fun. We saw so many alligators
