The tour guide that routed us to the bus was funny, pleasant and kept things moving along on the ride to the plantation. The tour of the Destrehan plantation was interesting and informative. Our guide for that experience, Nanette, I think, did a great job. The swamp boat tour was really fun, and the captain of the boat was hilarious and obviously in his element. The part of the experience that took a wrong turn was during the wait for the swamp boat when the tour guide told us not to use bug repellent because he found it unnecessary and "it irritates the alligators." This was a warm, humid, cloudy, drizzling day. Well, I was cowed into not using the bug repellent I had with me, and my daughter took the brunt of this bad advice. She has over a dozen mosquito bites on her legs, several on her forearms, and even a few on her forehead, which are still angry and painful five days later. (Even so, she wants me to point out she really enjoyed this tour.) I also have several bites on my lower legs. If the tour guide doesn't like the scent of insect repellent, how about giving people the option to use it , at least on their legs, right after getting off the bus (before the plantation tour begins) in an open air environment? This was just a negative ending to what otherwise was a really fun experience.
