One of the things my wife really wanted to do on our recent visit to the Big Island was to try ziplining. I was a bit surprised at her wish, as we are both senior citizens and my wife is not in the best condition physically. We asked the tour director at our hotel for recommendations for a good ziplining company. She didn't hesitate. She recommended Skyline Eco Adventures. She said it was the best in Hawaii. The folks at Skyline - Akaka Falls took the time to tell us what the physical requirements were, and we felt we could handle it. There were times between zip lines when we were at the back of the pack, but the guides always waited for us to catch up and never made us feel rushed. Our two main guides were Jake and Charles. Turned out that Charles was from Alabama like us, so immediately we had something in common and talk turned quickly to Bama football. Jake and Charles were very personable, easy to talk to and kept us in stitches with their jokes and puns. I had to ask Jake if either of them did "stand up" in their off time. Although they were a couple of funny guys, they always made us feel that we were in good hands. They explained things so that even our 60+ year-old brains could understand them. The fact that Skyline has seven zips was great. We started slow and easy and then things got progressively higher, longer and faster. We zipped over some beautiful countryside with some amazing ravines and waterfalls and all along the way our guides would point out the flora and fauna of the area. We even got to sample some "apple" bananas and fresh sugarcane. The zips were amazing and each one had something unique to offer along the way. As a photographer, I was a bit frustrated that I couldn't take photos while ziplining as I needed both hands to hold on, but then again, this way I got to really enjoy the experience. When we returned to the starting point, there was a tip jar waiting. When you go to Hawaii you are tipping someone all the time, be it the bellboy, Uber driver, waitress, etc. This may have been the one place I had no qualms about tipping. These guys earned it and deserved a bit extra. They helped us check off our bucket list with a most memorable and fun experience.
