Amelia Island is full of rich history, and is the only location in America to have flown 8 independent flags. It’s rich history takes us on a journey through time including the Timucuan Indians who were our first inhabitants as far back as 2000 BC. The flags tell the story of religious struggle and persecution, the effect of Christianity disallowing any other God to be worshiped. The devastating impact of the Revolutionary war on the island and rebels acting in the name of higher power. Smugglers, slave traders and pirates have all had a part to play in the evolution of this Islands growth. The eight flags tour takes you on a historical journey through all of the locations that those flags have flown over the islands incredible history. The only location in America to have had this number of independent flags. You will travel through the historic downtown district and out to the original Fernandina. On our journey we will cover each of the flags, the period from which they flew and the historical significance behind all of those dates from a historical perspective.

Daniel was a wonderful host, giving us such interesting information at every stop. He included some of the historic homes, which was a very nice surprise.

Fantastic history tour for those who can not (or don’t want to) walk to all of the points of interest. The amount of knowledge of the island our tour guide had was quite impressive!

All of our guides share the passion in telling a true to life story of the incredible events that shaped the history of this amazing paradise location. It has plenty of battle scars, but Amelia more than survived to tell the incredible stories from times gone by. Thank you!

This tour was a historian’s dream enhanced with lots of practical local knowledge from our wonderful guide/driver Daniel. He went above and beyond to explain the unique and complex history of the efforts beginning with the French in 1562 to control the gateway to the Florida peninsula. With due recognition of the role of the Native Americans who greeted the early settlors, he explained and put in the context of European World History and early US history, 4 centuries of struggle and contrasted Fernandina Beach with its larger more promoted rival St Augustine to the south. The van was very comfortable and well equipped for entry with unlimited cool bottled water available. Daniel on his own initiative offered to include in his narrative a description of several of the principal historic buildings and homes in both the extensive historic district and Old Town Fernandina Beach, revealing thereby his encyclopedic knowledge of the people who created and built a real community at the mouth of the St Mary’s River. He had ready knowledge of the forest products processing facilities that dominate the Town’s waterfront and support the local economy. We’ve taken many historical/city tours but this was by far the best combo. Along the way Daniel shared his love of the many restaurants in the historic district. This was a great experience and we’d recommend it to all—don’t let the price point put you off—any visitor will get more than their money’s worth

I really must thank you for a very detailed review and one that I'm sure sums up how incredibly amazing the history and architecture of this incredible island is. It really did have such an influence on world affairs at that time and I believe is really still a very less acredditted reason Florida became a territory so early and with a little push from our Scots friend Gregor MacGregor, flying the Green Cross flag.
