The new Whitney Museum is spectacular, especially at sunset seen from the Freedom Tower in NYC. There are two current major exhibits, plus the museum's collection that was featured at its opening last spring. But we really enjoyed the Archibald Motley exhibit, showing the Jazz age and black history in NYC AND Paris.

Before I talk about the museum and the art - I want to tell you to BUY TICKETS ONLINE ahead of time!!! My son and I went the week after Xmas, and my husband had purchased our tix the night before. When we arrived, there was a TWO HOUR line outside of the museum, and a ONE HOUR line in the lobby! We walked right in and were in the galleries in 5 minutes! Anyway, the new Whitney is in a great part of NYC - near meatpacking area with lots of shopping, markets and boutique hotels (the Gansevoort Hotel is around the corner). They built the museum with lots of outdoor terraces, which have amazing views of the City and the Hudson River and Bay. (you can even see the Statue of Liberty). So although my son wasn't thrilled by the art (he is 12) he loved all of the views! The Frank Stella exhibit was absolutely unreal - I could have spent all day in those galleries! (temp exhibit, check for dates). There were other amazing American artists work represented - Jasper Johns, Pollack, Krasner, Rothko, Homer. The list is too long. I'm not a huge fan of the weird, funky/twisted, modern stuff…I had to avoid a few rooms with my son - but there was plenty to see! A must-see museum in NYC - just buy tickets in advance!!

We visited after a walk down the High Line from the northernmost end... the museum is at the southernmost end of the High Line and well worth a visit. The building provides fabulous art for the eclectic mix of art contained in the museum.... We had an excellent docent tour while we were there and then enjoyed strolling through the very spacious building.....
