The new Whitney is worth a visit to see the building and, if it's a nice day, to take in the 360 degree views of Manhattan and the Hudson River from the terraces. I'm not a big fan of contemporary art, so we walked through the galleries fairly quickly, but there are some interesting pieces. Even better if you like modern art. At the south end of the High Line, another good thing to do when the weather is nice.

The new Whitney, as did the old, focuses on modern American art. It is at the south end of the newly opened Highline Walk, which itself is a reason to come to this part of Manhattan. Get tickets ahead of time to avoid lines (unless you come right at opening time in the AM). Start at the top, which will be a special exhibit, then descend via the outdoor plaza, with fabulous views. The 7th floor will be a selection from the primary collection, which the curators have arranged by theme, mixing media such as painting, sculpture and photography, as well as some films (a nice way to rest your feet). Again descend the plaza stairs, admiring outdoor sculptures (the labels for them are inside--in general, I found sculpture labels hard to connect with individual works). And on down. I spent 3 hours in the exhibits and did see almost everything, quite the marathon, but I enjoyed it immensely. From stunning to whimsical to head-scratching, there is something for everyone who likes 20th+ century art. Very well organized and pleasing to the eye and other sensibilities. It can be crowded, so on weekends, go early or late (open late Friday nights). A great combo day with the Highline and a visit to Greenwich Village or points south.

The Whitney's new location is terrific. Great space for the American art it exhibits. Easy to get around and filled with a wealth of art, this is a delightful way to spend a few hours. Great eateries nearby, as well.
