I love the Whitney - or should that read 'Loved the Whitney'. I loved it when it was in the previous location and the collections always looked incredible. I'm just a bit undecided about the new location. I love architecture but was not blown away by the new building....I don't know...I was just left feeling a bit well 'cold' about the whole experience I suppose. Staff were great - super friendly and there are some fab art works on display but would have liked to have seen more of the 'classic' American art works.....loved the Motley exhibition and thought was beautifully edited and displayed. Would definitely visit again in the hope that the works grow on me and that the space does also...Bookstore was super and there are some lovely actiivty books to keep children engaged....but overall I feel the museum has lost some of it's previous charm

My family and I wanted to visit the Whitney at its new location and see the Frank Stella exhibit. We went on a Saturday in the afternoon. While the line seemed long to get in, the staff was great about keeping it moving. We all were able to use our Bank of America cards to get in for free, a savings of $22 per person! The museum has really cool elevators that are art in themselves; beautiful flooring, sweeping views of the Hudson, and attractive galleries for the art. The rooms are big so you never feel confined. There is even a rooftop outside for fresh air and nice views. My only complaint is the cafe restaurant. Beware! I thought it would be a cheaper easier way to eat. Better to eat at one of the many little cafes around the neighborhood. The museum cafe was expensive ($45 for two small plates and a coffee), very trendy, and not good for families with kids. It's small too so we had to wait a half hour to get in. Should have looked at the menu more closely!

The new Whitney (opened May 2015) is a spectacular addition to the lower Manhattan arts and culture scene. The plain and angular design leaves room for the art, not the building, to be the main attraction. We visited especially to see the exhibit if the works of Archibald Motley, Jr. From early and revealing portraiture to evocative and sobering "Harlem Renaissance" energy, the exhibit is one of the finest we have seen in a lifetime of museum-going around the world.
