We purchased the 2 day hop on hop off tickets this week. We were told the bus would be every 15mins, but it was very sporadic, sometimes two at a time and sometimes 25mins between them, not easy to plan around. Each bus stop was queued and with some stops we had to wait while two buses went passed us because they were already full, finally getting on the third one with only seats left downstairs. Long waits for all stops. The commentary varied, some very good and informative, some very poor and just looking for tips all the time. On the second day, we were trying to get a bus near the intrepid museum, but the bus route had changed with no warning, no update on the website or app. We suddenly saw a bus right outside the museum which it isn't meant to go passed. We managed to flag it down and get on, but felt sorry then for the people at the stops that were missed. The app is very poor and a waste of time - the bus live tracking isn't accurate and doesn't reflect where the buses are at all. Finally, and most annoyingly, you cannot get on a bus at any stop and ride the whole route! They sell it to you like this, but it's not possible. The buses start and stop at a certain stop number, so if you get on at stop 10 of 20 for example, you would then have to get off again at stop 20 and wait (and queue) for another bus, as they don't do a continual loop. Very annoying if you want to do a whole loop but don't want to start at stop number 1! All in all, a bit frustrating and would only use it in future if absolutely necessary. City Sightseeing and Top View companies seemed to have much more regular buses when we were waiting at various stops and also didn't seem to have such packed buses - I would try them instead.

We did this tour last night. It might be a great tour if it doesn’t rain, but I strongly recommend against doing if it rains. Here’s our experience. Our bus had two floors, split into three sections. The upstairs had the front part covered by a transparent canopy and the back part open to the elements. Note that some buses are fully open upstairs. The downstairs was what you would expect — mostly. After lining up in the rain for 25 minutes, we made it to board the bus. The covered top was full and a friendly Big Bus employee advised us against riding downstairs because of a plastic wrap applied to the bus’s exterior that he said caused you to see “barely anything”. We took his advice, were issued plastic ponchos (they were rather effective) and we parked ourselves under the rain, upstairs. I tried to be a good trouper for about 30 minutes but the experience was useless because if you actually looked up or around you became soaked. And since I wear glasses, the rain made my vision something blurry. The alternative was to keep my head down, in which case I was only wet and cold but couldn’t see anything. At some point I gave up and tried my luck downstairs. A bunch of folks immediately followed me. I guess we were all waiting to see who would be the weakest link. I was. Downstairs was dry and warmer and more comfortable. Unfortunately after taking a few minutes to savor the improvement of my condition, I noticed that what I was promised was true. I could literally not see anything. And it was not just the wrap that caused the issue, the condensation from the passengers’ presence fogged the windows. I am sharing a picture of what I could see from my seat. I’d like to mention that we asked about rescheduling our tour while we were in line but the nice folks (I write that without irony, all the folks we interacted with were friendly) told me that t they couldn’t reschedule because they had collected our tickets already. Bottom line: try this tour, but skip it if it rains. The day tours may be Worth a try anyways because the wrap may be less of an issue but if it is a cold day, the condensation would likely still be present. And realize that if it rains you might be stuck in the rain or inside with no choice. If you can secure a seat under the upstairs canopy, that might be a good experience however.

Inexpensive tour, wasn’t fortunate enough to get one of the guides that people leave great reviews about. Not easy to find the correct bus stopping points to “hop on”, poor quality audio with provided earbuds you plug in to bus. Other, more consistently higher rated tours were booked out further in advance. I’ll book tours much sooner on my next trip. Never this one again though.
