The Needles Highway is more than a 14-mile road—it’s a spectacular drive through pine and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen, and rugged granite mountains. The road’s name comes from the needlelike granite formations that seem to pierce the horizon along the highway. The roadway was carefully planned by former South Dakota Governor Peter Norbeck, who marked the entire course on foot and by horseback. Construction was completed in 1922. Short stops at Sylvan Lake and for viewing unique rock formation called the Needle's Eye, so named for the opening created by wind, rain, freezing, and thawing.

Our driver, Larry, picked us up in Keystone and we were off for a fun day. Larry was very personable and provided lots and lots of good information. He really took good care of us. In addition to Mt Rushmore & Crazy Horse Memorial, we saw a lot of beautiful country. We also saw antelope, wild turkeys, wild donkeys, and lots of bison -- many up close, right next to our van. During those times, we could stand up in the safety of the van for picture taking. It was a woderful day. Thanks a lot, Larry!!

We created our convertible top vans specifically for the Custer Park Wildlife . . . you can get up-close and safely get great views and photos. Everything about this tour was right. We met in the lobby of our hotel right on time. There was only one other couple in our tour, which made the tour comfortable and family-like. Our leader/driver was well versed in what he showed us. He had been a 4th grade teacher and his knowledge and speaking ability were top notch.

Excellent tour - couldn't have seen so much if driving on our own, especially the one doing the driving! Larry was our driver, and answered any and all questions. He did not make us feel rushed. The open top made it a great way to take photos. The description of the tour was accurate, and much more than we expected.
