What To Expect
1
The Mitten Buttes And Merrick Butte
As we set up the horses to assign based on experience, weight, and height. We'll give you and our horse buddies a proper introduction. After you two get acquainted, we'll start galloping towards the West Mitten Butte, where you get to be up close. Take pictures of the East Mitten and Merrick buttes at a distance. When viewed from the south, the buttes appear to be two gigantic mittens with their thumbs facing inwards. If you capture the Merrick Butte at an angle you see that it's between the West & East Mitten Buttes. All three buttes are commonly seen together in many popular films and images. Its elevation is over 6,200 ft making it one of the tallest buttes in Monument Valley.
2
Sentinel Mesa
Located northwest of The Mittens is the Sentinel Mesa, a mountain with an elevation of over 6,400 ft. Most of the mesa is in the state of Utah, but a small southern section of it is in the state of Arizona. This breathtaking mesa can be seen from so many points.

Great horseback tour of some of Monument Valley's most celebrated Mesas. We had a great time with Deion and horses Monty and Bandit. The short tour was perfect for us and our guide gave an informative description of Navajo beliefs surrounding the rock formations. We felt safe and in control when on our horses! Deion was a fantastic host and guide, full of good vibes. We had to wait a little longer than expected but this is because they were fully booked out! Great tour overall.

We wanted to do this since we decided to come to the View Lodges and it didn't dissapoint. The tour is located to the far left of the site down past the lodges down a gravel road, not signposted at all (note to owner!) We were asked to sign the waiver and supplied helmets for safety, you are given leather holders for water bottles, then given your horse based on experience. We had Bandit, Navy, Eccles and Monty all lovely and very well behaved. The boys took us round explained all the history and why the land is sacred which was really nice. We were also pointed out the rock that was used in Mission Impossible (where Tom Cruise is climbing up it and Metallica playing I Disappear theme tune on top of it, check out You Tube) Also the rock in Transformers, scene from John Wayne films, Forest Gump. Unfortunately the road leading to the Back to the Future 3 site (outdoor cinema when Marty goes back to 1885) is closed, very sad. The hour flys by but bottoms knew they'd been in a saddle for an hour, we did this at 3pm and it was hot in the sun, suggest first or last outing. The views and photos were amazing and you feel you have the whole valley to yourselves. We cannot recommend this tour any higher.
