African American History Tour - The Sit-In & Civil Rights

Overview
This Nashville walking tour is a fun-filled experience uncovering the empowering stories behind the key women and men of the civil rights movement. You will hear stories about history’s fiercest women and most courageous men.

We'll visit the Davidson County Courthouse and stand on the front steps where civil rights leader, Diane Nash, confronted the mayor demanding change. Then, discover how women played a central role in the planning, strategies, tactics, and actions of the movement — including the civil rights marches. Enter the Witness Walls, a secret art attraction with hidden images that has a math and science component.

In between stops, you will get the inside scoop on leading African American entrepreneurs and business leaders in Nashville today. With United Street Tours, you’ll take action by walking to celebrate equality.

We had a blast today learning about different Nashville women who made great strides in the civil rights movement. Chakita was soo entertaining even my 3 y/o (7 and under free) had a blast. Chakita did not miss a beat when my Murphy used her as a resting post in front of Woolworth. ( A historic site important to the Civil rights movement where sit ins happened. We were immersed in the history and it gave me goosebumps. Chakita is a hero. She is making sure that the unknown is known and brought to light. Thank you for expanding my mental horizons and fueling my fire to learn and be more active. Some pictures it may look like we are not paying attention but I was just keeping an eye on Murphy. What you don’t see is Chakita adjusting her body position or volume to make sure we were included in the tour. We were lucky to have an intimate group with it being a Monday morning and it allowed us more questions and a more personalized tour. I can’t wait to do my next one. I had an amazing tour with founder, Chakita. She was extremely knowledgeable of the history, including things she’s learned from personal relationships with some of the people whose experiences she mentions on the tour. I felt like we could have walked and talked for hours. I will definitely be recommending friends to this business.

Very informative, Nashville history that doesn’t always get covered, and yet it’s right under our noses. Highly recommend!
