ABSOLUTELY NOT RECOMMENDING KBA! BOOKED DIRECTLY WITH WEST AIR, GET SAME SERVICES AND SAVE MONEY! I booked the bear viewing tour to Clark Lake National Park through KBA (KENAI BACKCOUNTRY ADVENTURES), paying a total of $1231.6 per person, including tax. However, on the day of our tour, we were extremely disappointed to find that there was no representative from KBA present at any point. We gathered at the West Air office in Nikiski, and the entire trip was managed and led by the pilot and guide provided by West Air. KBA was a no-show; they did not provide any service or support throughout our experience. To make matters worse, we later discovered that if we had booked directly with West Air, the cost would have been only $750 per person. This means KBA charged us nearly $500 more (almost a 40% markup) for absolutely nothing in return. Their lack of service and transparency is unacceptable, and I feel compelled to warn others about this poor value proposition. I would not recommend KBA to anyone looking for a reliable and cost-effective way to experience the beauty of Clark Lake National Park's wildlife. Save your money and book directly with the service providers.

At Kenai Backcountry Adventures (KBA), we take great pride in the unparalleled quality of our tours and the exceptional service we deliver to each and every guest. The situation described in this review is not only inconsistent with our operating standards but also fails to reflect the experiences of the many satisfied guests who have joined us for once-in-a-lifetime adventures. We find it deeply concerning when misleading information is presented in a way that unfairly distorts the reality of what we offer. As an established and reputable company, we stand by the transparency of our pricing, the professionalism of our team, and the unmatched value of our services. It is unfortunate that this review seems designed to harm our business rather than reflect a genuine experience. We encourage readers to look at the numerous positive reviews that accurately showcase the high level of care and commitment we provide. Should there be any doubts or questions, we invite potential guests to contact us directly for truthful and accurate information about the authentic and extraordinary experiences that our customers rave about.

It is extremely important to do your research before using this company for anything that might be subject to cancellation. They are simply not prepared to deal with it in a reasonable way. Me and my kids had booked a trip to see bears in Lake Clark. I knew that weather cancellation was a real possibility and was prepared for that. Unfortunately, the day of the trip it was canceled due to bad weather. That was disappointing, but out of the control of Kenai Backcountry and also the right thing to do for safety. Before the trip, I got multiple calls from the company asking if I'd bought trip insurance. That should have been my first warning sign. They also mentioned that they'd be moving the type of trip from a land-based one to a boat-based one. Not what I signed up for, but I really had no choice in the matter. After the trip was canceled, I was on my own. I was told to take it up with trip insurance and that they were keeping my payment (which is a substantial amount). Supposedly they issue a "credit" - good luck with that, they don't appear to have any systems to issue or track this credit. I'd avoid this company for bear viewing for many reasons: 1) The distance from Seward to the flight departure is long. If the trip gets canceled at the last minute you have wasted 6 hours of your life. 2) They claim that this "no refund" policy is standard. NOT TRUE. Look at other companies - I've yet to find one that doesn't issue refunds due to weather cancellation, and one even issues refunds if you make it out there but don't see bears! Additionally, the plane charter that they contract with was literally issuing refund checks at the airport to everyone but the Kenai Backcountry customers. 3) This idea of using trip insurance is not that ethical...it appears that they want to keep your money and shift the burden onto an insurance company for their inability to provide service. I would highly recommend not going out of Seward, and I learned a good lesson about digging into the ethics of the companies that I patronize. Only reasons for 2 stars rather than 1 is that I'm glad they put safety first.

Personally I was very disappointed with this experience. We hiked back and forth through tall grass and bushes, muddy bogs and soggy beaches for at least 5 miles. At one point we were ask to remove our shoes and socks, roll up our pants and cross through very deep mud to cross back over to catch the plane. All of this and we only saw one bear! Our guide got us close, but one bear sighting is not what I paid for. This was supposed to be the highlight of my Alaska trip. I was so disappointed. Also, as a side note, you might want to provide knee high rubber boots for your guests and emphasize bug spray. I wanted love this trip, but sadly I didn’t.
