I visited the Botanical Garden with my best friend for her birthday, and it was such a lovely experience. The Orchid Show was the highlight of our exploration, but the rest of the garden doesn't fall far behind. This massive plot of land is such a delight to have in the Bronx. We will certainly be back!

The Orchid show, which runs from late Feb- May 1, is definitely worth seeing any year but this year it was especially gorgeous. I went with my dad when it opened (covid masks--ugh--steamed glasses---ugh) in the humid conservatory/glass house. But still memorable. Not much else blooming then (but great gift shop--wonderful book section, indoor plants and planters, all kinds of goodies). We ate at Hudson Grill, which was understaffed on our (week) day but still elegant and a nice place for fancier lunch. I decided to get an annual membership ($90) although getting there from Manhattan is a little tricky---hope I get my money's worth, because it really is a special place in any season. I just went again--NO MASKS-- YAY!, the orchid show is amazing, pansies, daffodills, magnolias were all starting to bloom. The outdoor flowering plant selection at their store is nice as well. Thought I'd take metro north back from the park (I'd hitched a ride up), but I guess afternoon trains are fewer than I thought so my friends dropped me at Fordham Road and I took the D to the B--perfect UWS drop off. Without friends, one would take the train, then catch a bus down the hill to the garden or walk 15 minutes (at least it's downhill). Pro: cheap. Con: if you're visiting, metro north train is nicer and drops you across the street. It's also not that expensive, and maybe worth not having to figure out trains and bus stuff. Basically, this place is a treasure and while a one day pass isn;t cheap, it's just a wonderful trip for all ages--so many ways to experience nature.

Recommend only if there’s an event such as the orchid show. Only do with Bronx zoo on March. Not much flowering on March. The tram provides a good break after the zoo.
