Amish Experience Visit-In-Person Tour

Overview
Many visitors to Lancaster seek out meaningful personal contact with the Amish community. Imagine visiting three Amish properties where our longstanding relationships allow you to become their guests during your stay. This exclusive tour is limited to 14 guests, and provides the rare opportunity to meet and talk to various Amish where they live and work. The three stops: Visit an Amish farm at milking time, go behind-the-scenes with an Amish craftsman, and then sit and chat with an Amish family right in their home.

We took the visit-in-person (VIP) tour which is the 3 hour version that includes a visit to an artisan, an Amish family home and a farm at milking time. Great tour guide, fascinating visits, wonderful and informative experience. Don't forget that you can't take photographs of Amish people. The tour guide gave us a great insight into the Amish lifestyle and beliefs. The downside is that the bus was designed for, well let's call them vertically challenged persons. Getting in and out of it was a nightmare at each stop. Otherwise it would have been 5 stars. Last point, be aware that there are no rest stops on the 3 hour tour so use the facilities before you go.

Thank you for visiting, and for taking the time to write a review. Glad to hear you found the visits interesting and informative! Sorry to hear about the van inconvenience. On the evening tour, the vehicle is much larger, and the van is a "trial run" vehicle for daytime tours. Thanks again for visiting and we'll look forward to seeing you again!

This experience is a good way to learn about Amish ways of life and, in reality, we'd not be able to visit homes nor a school on our own, so this is probably the best way to learn more. The farmlands tour was good (mind you, one stop only and the rest in the bus for an hour and a half), but the driver went too fast along the roads to take photos of the lovely countryside and farms. It would have been better if we had opportunities to get out of the bus to take photos of the landscape. It would also have been apt for the guide to explain from the outset about the disrespect of photographing people like they were animals in a zoo. Some folks on our tour were culturally insensitive, to the point that the Amish people had to say no. Awkward.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We try to give a lot of information about Amish culture on the Farmlands Tour, while also allowing people to see the beautiful countryside. We want visitors to feel that they are receiving their money’s worth in terms of learning about the Amish, as people often drive around by themselves afterwards. Another reason we are unable to stop to allow for pictures at certain places is due to safety concerns (getting on and off the shuttle at the side of the road). Guides are happy to assist guests at the end of the tour who want to know how to return to a place they passed or stopped at. Thank you for mentioning about not taking photographs of the Amish. Most visitors are respectful of our Amish neighbors, but it is always good for our guides to remind people about this (which they usually do). If you are ever in the area again, you might enjoy our Visit-In-Person Tour more, as this is a longer tour, including three stops (an Amish dairy, business and home). Again, thank you for visiting!

This absolutely is THE tour for anyone who is here for the first time , like we were. Wow ! Never expected such a thorough , very personal , informative experience. I hope everyone else gets to have the guide we were privileged to have , Kent. (Maybe you can ask for him). He obviously has lots of contact with the Amish families we visited and the mutual love is so very evident. Thank you Kent , for broadening our awareness and experience .
