Clay (of Red Clay Tours) is a font of knowledge and passionate about making sure you understand the history of civil rights issues in Birmingham. He leads small groups so you have plenty of opportunity to ask questions. I thought I knew a lot before I went on the tour but learned so much more. By using a small, comfortable van, the tour covers a lot of ground. Clay's descriptions of events right in the places where they occurred can't help but touch your heart.

This was a wonderfully informative tour, while at the same time being incredibly emotionally charged. All of the information is greatly researched and shared via the tour owner/operator who is a Birmingham native. Being from the Midwest and now living in South America, I lacked meaningful knowledge about the South and the Civil Rights movement despite it being part of the curriculum when I was in school. After hearing stories and seeing the locations of horrific crimes/atrocities against humanity (bombings, assaults, shootings, etc) I admit that I felt sick to my stomach. However, I learned new perspectives and made new knowledge-connections to make the Civil Rights movement more personally meaningful. This is certainly a tour to go on— though he does operate other tours that sound like they are equally worth it.
