Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

We will walk over a mile on the tour in temperatures anywhere between 40-100F. Guests must be able to walk unassisted at a reasonable speed.

This Birmingham Civil Rights Tour was an experience that every American should have! The tour filled a part of a gaping hole in our discussion of our shared American history. This learning experience is not only important for visitors to better understand Birmingham and the Civil Rights Movement, but, for any American - visitor or not, including our young in school. International visitors would wholly enjoy the learning experience as well in order to fully understand our American history.

Clay has created a great tour regarding Civil Rights in Birmingham and the history leading up to the more well-known events. He has done his homework and covers moments, people, and landmarks to lay out a seamless tour that will open your eyes and your hearts. Oh yeah...and plus he throws in his knowledge of excellent Alabama Bar-B-Que! Strongly recommend this tour!

I enjoyed the tour very much. It is very different to experience history on the ground where it happened vs reading it in a book. Our guide, Clay was very informative and knowledgeable. It makes a big difference to have a guide who is from Birmingham giving the tour. He didn't sugarcoat the experience and there was a nice mix of locations. Many of the old buildings still remain so that make the experience that much more enjoyable. Plus his father loan me his jacket on what turned out to be a colder day than I had thought.
