Overview

On this three hour WALKING & DRIVING tour, you’ll travel around Birmingham to learn about the struggle for equal rights from the end of the Civil War up through the Civil Rights movement. Your tour will begin at the statue of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, the leader of the local movement Civil Rights struggle. We’ll discuss why the Civil Rights movement was needed and what led to segregation's fall. As you visit the major churches, parks and houses, you'll learn about a few groups who fought for Civil Rights in Birmingham and who fought against it.

We will walk over a mile on the tour in temperatures anywhere between 40-100F. Guests must be able to walk unassisted at a reasonable speed.

16th Street Baptist Church

Learn about the role the church played in the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham and the history of the church bombing that tragically killed four little girls.

See where the march protests ended in Birmingham and learn about groups fighting for Civil Rights in Birmingham

Clay gave an excellent tour of civil rights history and landmarks in Birmingham. You MUST go on this tour if you really want to learn about this subject. Clay took me all over Birmingham visiting different sites, explaining what happened and engaging in conversation with me the entire time. I would have never thought to visit "dynamite hill" or Shuttlesworth's church in Collegeville (which can be difficult to get to). He knows his stuff. My only regret is not going on one of the other tours as well!

One of the best tours we have taken! Clay made us feel like we were really there in the middle of the civil rights movement. He made the events up close and personal. Great guy, and thoroughly engaging!

if you are in Birmingham, do yourself a favor and spend some time with Clay learning about the history of the area, particularly in relation to Civil Rights. Start at the beginning, with the founding of the city in the late 1800s (after the Civil War) and move forward from there, learning about what makes Birmingham tick and how its struggles have impacted the town around you today. Ask questions, lots of questions and be present in an area whose history can teach us much about where we are today. Well done, Clay! I am so glad we had the opportunity to tour with you while we were in Birmingham.
