Black Cat Historical Day Tour

Overview
Our daytime historic tour is a story of Pirates and Puritans, Witchcraft and War.  We travel around the city of Salem and share the tales of its amazing history.  From its humble beginnings as a city founded on the idea of peace for all, to the site of the largest incident of witchcraft hysteria in the modern world, learn how it became one of the biggest shipping ports in America, played host to some of the most famous authors of all time, and learn some of the biggest secrets this city has to offer!

Our daytime walking tour lasts about an hour and forty five minutes, and covers a mile's worth of the downtown area. It is an easy walk, but we suggest comfortable shoes and clothing to match the season. Our tours are unscripted, and can be customized to every group's particular areas of interest!

I came to Gloucester for a business trip and wanted to do something fun in the spare time. The problem is that there is nothing open after 5pm in Salem. However, there are many “spooky” tours to choose from after dark. To be honest, I wasn’t looking for a spooky halloween style tour although our guide Dan shared some scary stories which was nice. I wanted to learn more about Salem’s interesting history and their witch trials. Dan was very knowledgeable and I enjoyed the tour. Highly recommended!

We had an amazing experience during the tour, we learned so much and took great photos. Our tour guide Jeff was spectacular, he had so much knowledge to share with us and made our night so memorable. We will definitely recommend this tour to our family and friends!

As a historian, you can imagine I squirm a little at the idea of taking local history tours. There is certainly a mix of information given out in Salem and it can be difficult to know what to expect. Many guides choose a good story over true history. I was invited by Black Cat Tours to take their history day tour and was delighted at its historical accuracy. Our guide, Dan was incredibly engaging and had wonderful bits of comedy woven through his stories. Dan not only could he talk in detail about the stops on the tour but also welcomed questions about surrounding buildings and landmarks. He referenced sources he had used in his research and explained how history is always evolving as more information becomes available. As a side note, I also appreciate Black Cat's dedication to their community, they offer free tours to Salem residents and their owner's Dan and Lara can often be found attending city meetings and advocating for Salem's burial grounds. I highly recommend you hop on a tour next time you're in Salem or play tourist for the day and grab a complimentary spot as a Salem resident. You won't be disappointed!
