Our guide and driver Frank was great. He was very knowledgeable and shared a lot of information about the valley. We took the 2 1/2 hour tour and enjoyed the whole experience. The valley is beautiful and Blackwater Tours is a great way to see it. Thanks!

Scheduled the first tour in the morning (8am) about one week out and chose the extended tour (2 1/2 hour). It was our family of four only on the tour and we were in the open vehicle that is seen in many pictures. I chose Blackwater for their positive reviews and pricing. The main reason I chose a tour at all was because I had read reviews that stated the road in Monument Valley is fairly rough. I am glad I followed that advice as it is not a road I'd feel comfortable driving my personal vehicle unless it was built for off-road excursions. Our guide was extremely friendly and stopped frequently to let us take pictures. He even let us take our time at some of these stops so we could walk around and explore up-close. They also have a cooler of bottled water in the vehicle which was a nice touch. What stands out about taking a tour is the fact he can point out the different rock formations and explain how they got their name and the petroglyphs that I would not recognize if I drove myself. This tour also took us into areas that only the tour operators have access. This allowed us to see an elderly Navajo lady in her home as she spun yarn. While this was neat, it was *expected* to leave a tip. As you drive around, the guide will stop in areas where little shops are set up to let you do your own shopping. Keep this in mind as you might need some extra cash. Our guide though never made us feel obligated to look in the shops. Sometimes we took a few pictures and hopped right back on the truck. Overall, the tour was worth it! I wish I could remember our driver's name to give him credit! The 2 1/2 hour tour was about the right amount of time for our family. I felt at the end as we were climbing back up the hill towards the visitor's center that I was ready to be done.

There are several tour operators and by chance we were fortunate to have this tour operator and even more fortunate to have Frank as our tour guide. Frank was low key but thoughtful and proud of his heritage and Monument Valley and helped us appreciate this beautiful land and people. Awesome was at the last stop Frank pulled out his Wooden Indian Flute and played a native tune in a secluded area -- my wife and I have traveled significantly and this ranks with the top experiences we have had - comparable to seeing the Alhambra in Spain lit at night. There are three tours to choose from - the basic tour ($75/person) which we didn't do because we were able to travel this with our own vehicle; basic plus additional area ($85/person); and the one we chose in a totally different area called the "Mystery Tour" ($95/person) which included drawings on walls, natural arches and very early dwellings of the Anasazi. We chose the 3 1/2 hour "Mystery Tour" at sunset -- beautiful with the alpen glow. If you have the time this is the tour to take.
