I live in Michigan but work in Manhattan. One weekend rather than flying home I flew my wife out to NYC to spend the weekend. Of course we hit some fabulous restaurants but I wanted to surprise my wife with a gift. She loves photography and is working to improve her skillset. I was looking for someone to take her around Central Park on a photo tour and hopefully give her some pointers on selecting and framing her shots and using her camera up to it's capabilities. I found NYC Photo Safari and booked a 2 1/2 hour session in Central Park on Saturday morning. Man, did I hit it out of the park with the wife. Major Brownie Points for me thanks to them.
We were lucky in that it was just my wife and I with the instructor Zim. And that is exactly what she was. An instructor. Not tour guide, an instructor and a very good one. Even though I don't even own a camera Zim helped us both be better photographers. My Iphone pics will be better because of the time we spent with Zim. My wife had AN AMAZING experince as Zim taught her how to get the most out her Cannon Rebel camera. I was expecting it to be a session with someone showing us around, talking lots of pictures at lots of locations and us getting a couple tips on taking better pictures. It was kind of the opposite. Instead we got what equates to a semesters worth education in a photography class in 2 1/2 hours. We only stopped at a few locations but those locations allowed Zim to really demonstrate the various skills of framing our shots and using the camera's settings to get the best shots in different light conditions and settings. What we learned was way more valuable than being shown around Central Park and being shown lots of things to take pictures of. We learned how to get great pics anywhere under any light condition. We can always go back to more locations in Central Park but the skills we learned will make us better photographers whereever we go. Even for a simple Iphone photographer like me.
My wife had a great experience and someday we will get her back to work with Zim some more after she practices the skills she learned today.
Normally the morning would be a group of 6-8 but we got lucky for it to be just us with Zim. But the good news is you can book them for a private session for a very reasonable fee and I highly reccomend you do just that.
NYC Photo Safari has our highest recomendation.

Both of us with not much experience in shooting in cities, learned a ton from Zim - lots of good feedback, tips and tricks, best locations, what to do, what to avoid - recommended!

This was my fourth time taking a New York Photo Safari, this time the Central Park tour. Instructor Zim typically starts each tour by asking each person what they hope to get out of it and by going over some photography principles. She will then give you an assignment and then critique your work and give tips on how to improve your photos. The groups are kept small so that you have ample opportunity to get tips on your photos and Zim's explanations are easy to understand. We made several stops during the tour at various locations within the park so you got a variety of photos and could work on a number of different principles.
I look forward to my next Photo Safari! I always learn something and slowly but surely my photography improves.
