Comb Jelly Bioluminescence Kayak Tour

Overview
In the cooler Florida months, bioluminescent Comb Jellies congregate in the protected waters of the Indian River Lagoon. Living in the most bio-diverse estuary in North America, Comb Jellies are clear, glob-like creatures that, despite their name, do not sting! So as you paddle the calm waters laced with mangroves and palm trees, you can catch and hold these gentle glowing creatures. They're right at your fingertips while having a safe, awe-inspiring kayak adventure with those who share your enthusiasm for new and unique experiences.

In addition to the stars, the myriad of protected wildlife around you, and the Comb Jelly’s bioluminescence, their “ribs” are lined with cilia that they use to propel themselves, so when you cast a flashlight on them just right, they’ll also refract a dynamic rainbow-y light show! They’re right at your fingertips while having a safe, awe-inspiring kayak adventure with those who share your enthusiasm for unique experiences.

We originally booked a dinoflagellate tour for October 2016 during our wedding trip to Florida. Unfortunately a hurricane ended the season early, meaning they had to cancel our booking. We were offered either a refund or a rebooking. We opted to rebook the next time we were over, however our return took a bit longer than we’d hoped. I contacted A Day Away to see if it was still possible to book 3+ years after the initial booking, and I really couldn’t be happier with the service received. They were super helpful and accommodating, despite being under new management and the previous booking being so long ago. We were able to get on a comb jelly tour with Buddy, who was very knowledgeable and patient. It was my first time kayaking, but he was great - checking I was comfortable and able to keep up. He told us lots about the area and the wildlife and answered all of our questions. Although we didn’t see huge numbers of jellies, we spotted a few and Buddy even scooped a couple up so we could hold them and take a closer look. The jellies were fascinating and we’re already looking forward to a return visit when we come back to Florida in 2021. I would not hesitate to recommend.

Three generations went together, and everyone had a great time! The guides were friendly, informative, and patient. Even the pre-teen (who is sometimes too cool to spend time with Mom) enjoyed herself!

We did the Sunset Bioluminescent Tour and had a great time. The first part of the your was incredible bird watching as the sun set. We also saw a couple of dolphins as we headed back into the mangroves to play with Bioluminescent Comb Jellies. Our guide, Duncan, was very knowledgeable and patiently answered our questions. It was a fascinating evening.
