Charleston is best seen by a carriage tour. There is a lot to see, and the horse makes goes at the right pace to savor the city. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and very engaging. Like so many, she wasn't a native, but like us came to the city and was charmed by it. Be aware that the historic area is (5000 buildings they say) gets divided up into districts, and each district has its own routes, determined by the city. Each and every horse tour stops to find out what route they have, and if I understand it correctly, the districts change day to day, so no tour can show you more than a sliver of the historic area. Not the carriage company's fault, but just something to know.

We purchased the "combo" tour for the harbor tour and carriage ride. We were glad to see the strict rules governing the use of the horses and guarding their health and well-being. Bill was our tour guide and he was awesome! Provided lots of humor along with the history of Charleston. To prevent the carriages from "clogging" up the already busy streets, all carriage tours are sent out on different routes. We'll definitely do another carriage tour so that we see another part of the town.
