We were interested in learning some history about New Orleans. We are from Natchitoches, La. Our tour guide Mary was absolutely WONDERFUL!!! She had a wealth of knowledge about the history of New Orleans. She had a great sense of humor. She made the tour fun and exciting!! We traveled to some of the oldest and well known restaurants in the French Quarters!!

I was reluctant to book the French Quarter tasting tour after mixed reviews on here but went ahead regardless. I am glad we did because we had such a wonderful experience. We did the tour on our first day we arrived in New Orleans and I highly recommend it. Being Australian we had limited knowledge on the local cuisines and it was a great way to learn all about the food, history and sample local dishes. The tour guide was able to give us recommendations of where to eat and was a wealth of information. I guess the tour is very dependant on who you get and how many in the group. I am pretty sure our tour guides name was Sally and she was so lovely. We were very fortunate that the tour went ahead as it was only my husband and myself on the tour - so we had her full attention and could ask all the questions we wanted. The of the biggest reasons this tour was so useful is that if you are anything like us you are clueless to the amazing food establishments in NOLA and the rich history that goes along with them. All these restaurants you enter to what you think is the whole place and then one corridor leads to another to what feels like 'secret rooms'. It is so fascinating.

We visited New Orleans before and after a cruise in August-September 2012. On the backside, we decided to do the culinary and history tour. It was Labor Day - and my husband and I were the only people on the tour. Our tour guide was Mary - a 78 year old spry woman! Unfortunately, being that it was Labor Day, Antoines was closed (as was one other restaurant). We realized we were taking a chance on a Hoiday...but we still have a blast! When we hit Tujaques, Mary told the owner that we missed the gumbo at Antoines - so they gave us a good sized cup of gumbo AND the wonderful brisket. We got to try turtle soup, muffalettas, ice cream, pralines, a crepe, and even got a cooking demonstration. All in all, a fun afternoon. Wear comfortable shoes! You walk EVERYWHERE around the French Quarter!
