My friend, her husband and I had the pleasure of participating in a walking tour of the French Quarter which featured visits to Antoine's, Arnaud's Remoulade, Desire's Oyster Bar, DiVina Gelato, Leah's Pralines, Tujague's and Creole Delicacies. Our hostess was a lovely and engaging woman from Algiers Point (just across the river) - Candy Kagan. Her knowledge and obvious enthusiasm for her heritage was a big part of why this tour was so interesting. Seven of us met her at the Hermes Bar at Antoines where we kicked off our adventure with a tour if the world famous and historical restaurant. We even got a tour of the kitchen, the nerve center of the operation. The history and the beauty of Antoines captivated us and we were happily along for a culinary and historical lesson that lasted a little over 3 hours. Candy was well informed and warmly welcomed at each of the participating venues and her extensive knowledge of the cultural and historical significance of the ingredients was very interesting. We tasted shrimp, brisket (which I will never again eat without the incredible creole sauce which accompanied our sample at Tujagues - pronounced TuJack's), gumbo, gelato make with locally grown flavourings, Mardi Gras Dip (yummmmm!), pralines (pronounced prawleeens), file gumbo, turtle soup and muffulatta. Our tour was not limited to just the culinary aspects of New Orleans as Candy pointed out various locations and gave us a brief history of various lovely old buildings throughout our tour. I would recommend this tour to anybody who has an affection for both food and history. Be sure that you get Candy to conduct the tour - she's fantastic! [email protected] - she is a Travel NOLA consultant and well worth the fee.

Okay, so I'm travelling alone and I do a lot of tours as ways of see thing I wouldn't normally do by myself. I did a bunch of tours while in Nola, and this was one of the better ones. I can't remember the name of my tour guide, but she knew a lot about the history of New Orleans and the food. And the food was great! You also get to go through a bunch of back rooms and the like of various restaurants, and learn some of the history of the food, various prominent families, and even a bit about mardi gras. It's really interesting, especially to people like me who come from a land far, far away and don't have much of a sense of the history of the place. There are two things though. Firstly, I think this is better if you do it at the start of your trip so that you have a sense of where to eat while you're in Nola. I did it in the middleish/towards the end of my trip and didn't get a chance to utilise all the knowledge I gained, so you're better to do it early so you know where to eat on subsequent outings. The second thing is about the portions. They're tastings, as they say on the website. However, they do also say that you get enough of them so that most people feel satisfied at the end. This is true, but the tastings are waaay spread out over a couple of hours with lots of interesting history in between. I had an early but large breakfast and thought this would do as a late lunch, which was a little mistaken. Apparently the tour guide had had people do similar things in the past, and it's not a good idea. You'll eventually get the food on the tour, but in the meanwhile you'll be very hungry....

We had been to New Orleans several times and eaten at some of its most noted places. But this visit was different. Our New Orleans Culinary History Tour took us beyond the dining rooms of the city's famous eateries. Leah, our tour guide, led us on a leisurely tour of the French Quarter and gave us behind scenes views of the places and people of many of New Orleansā€™ famous restaurants. Her knowledge of the city and its renowned restaurants and bars gave us insight into the fascinating history of New Orleansā€™ cuisine and its prominent restaurant families and chefs. Our tour was an excellent combination of historical tidbits and tasty food samples. It was a great way to spend a few hours in New Orleans.
