I have been to New Orleans many times, but this tour taught me so much that I didn't know about the history of the settlement of New Orleans and the development of its cuisine. It's all done in a delightful way through visiting local historic restaurants such as Arnaud's and Antoine's, and tasting their specialities. The shrimp remoulade at Arnaud's was the best, but the gumbo at Antoine's, the turtle soup at Desire Oyster Bar and the gelato at La Divina were also fabulous. Our guide was Candy, who does about 2 tours a week. She was very knowledgeable and personable- a real delight. Getting to tour the beautiful rooms at Antoine's and getting a peek at the kitchen was beyond our expectations. The tour took a full 3 hours, and was worth every minute. I highly recommend this tour. Some others have suggested doing it at the beginning of your stay- I second that. We couldn't get a reservation for the first day we were here, and by the time we did it, we didn't have time to go back to some of the places. Oh, well. Next time.

It was our first visit to New Orleans and we wanted a little history of the culinary traditions. We were not disappointed. Candy was our guide and the tour was a good 2 hours of stops at some of the most famous French quarter landmarks, with tastes of well-known specialties (the shrimp in mustard sauce at Arnaud's was exceptional). What was interesting about Candy's tour is she took us back stage at many of these places, and we saw them from another point of view. Her knowledge is terrific, culinary and NOLA history. We are now quite knowledgeable about roux and it's many variations. Candy was also a delightful guide, with a warm friendly manner. We can't wait to go back and do another of the Culinary history tours. A must when you visit New Orleans.

I read about the New Orleans Culinary Tour in Spirit Magazine (Southwest Airlines) in early March on another trip. Got home and went on line and booked the walking tour as I was spending a week in French Quarter later in March. We went yesterday and it was worth every penny ($46 each). We went to restaurants that we probably would never go to (too expensive or intimidating) and got behind the scenes tours int he restaurants and tasted some great food. We started at Antoines with gumbo, we had shrimp remoulade and toured Arnauds and the lovely ballgown galary of his daughter upstairs. We had turtle soup at Desire, an oyster bar and reds beans and rice @ a cooking shop. Our guide, Mary, was an older woman who is retired and lives in the French Quarter, she was extremely knowledgeable and funny too. We also had a wonderful Italian Muffaletta. Book your tour near the beginning of your vacation so you can go back and visit the restaurants and shops while you are still there. This is a must do - we learned so much more and we have been coming to the French Quarter since 1990. www.noculinarytours.com
