If you want to get a thorough understanding of New Orleans' history, I can really recommend this tour. Our guide Suzanne was great and really made us understand the development of the city with its both French and Spanish background. If I got it right, the guides are working for tips, and the fee you are paying for the tour instead supports the Louisiana State Museum, which is a good thing itself. You also get a free entrance ticket to the Cabildo, a former government building which is now a museum about NOLA's history, located at Jackson's square. Just note that it is a 2 hours long walking tour, which can be a bit demanding if you are not well prepared.

We took three walking tours in NOLA. This was far and away the best. Our guide, John Shields, was so kind and knowledgeable and thorough. His would be a great first day tour -- really orients a person to the place. The price of the tour includes free admission to an interesting house museum.

Walking tours are a great way to see any city, and those offered by volunteers for non-profit organizations are often the best, since the tour guides are doing it for the love of it, and the organizations usually give them a great training course. That was definitely the case for this tour of the French Quarter by Friends of the Cabildo (part of the state museum system). The guide kept us interested for 2-1/2 hours (it was meant to be a 2-hour tour, but none of the attendees minded at all that it ran long). The cost also includes admission to the 1850 House, which I really enjoyed. There are so many tour operators in New Orleans, including walking tours, but I strongly recommend this one.
